Lifestyle changes beat metabolic syndrome in study
In a three year trial from the Annals of Internal Medicine adults with high blood sugar but not diabetes were assigned to metformin, placebo, or a lifestyle program with a low calorie, low fat diet and 2.5 hours per week of exercise. Metabolic syndrome persisted in 61 percent of placebo and 55 percent of metformin groups, while 42 percent in the lifestyle group remained affected. Among those with syndrome at baseline, 18 percent placebo, 23 percent metformin, and 38 percent lifestyle no longer had it.
