Broadway First Night Hard Job Aims at Religion and Rock

Broadway first night arrives with Hard Job Being God an all singing Old Testament spoof by Tom Martel who also plays God. Five performers Gini Eastwood Stu Freeman Anne Sarofeen and John Twomey deliver bold numbers like I'm Countin on You Amos Gonna Give You Hell and You're on Your Own. Robot-like amplification accompanies a minimalist plot comparing biblical scenes across centuries though critics say it lacks a solid narrative grip.

Critics Pan Old Testament Rock Musical Show

Clive Barnes of the New York Times notes the show offers pathetic lyrics and a brief Old Testament run through. Douglas Watt of the Daily News calls it an audition for a poorly conceived rock musical about the Old Testament. Richard Watts Jr. of the New York Post calls it over an hour of virtual nothingness. WCBS-TV and WNBC-TV critics condemn it as amateur and irritating. AP reporter William Glover praises it as spellbinding and easy to enjoy.
