Tolton sainthood debate stirs black white priesthood history
Chicago officials push for Rev. Augustus Tolton as the first Black priest to be named a saint while Bishop James Augustine Healy is proposed as an alternative. The discussion spotlights race, identity and legacy in 19th century Catholic hierarchies. Tolton fled slavery era borders and trained in Rome after being denied by American seminaries. Healy was light-skinned enough to pass as white, complicating applause of African American heritage.
