West High School in Iowa City produced nine valedictorians in the Class of 2000. Three remain in Iowa, including two doctors in residency at University of Hospitals and Clinics. Erik Alexander, 28, completed education in Iowa, trained in Milwaukee, and chose to return for residency.

High risk offenders remain off street
Convicted sex offender Daniel Garren, 66, a Vietnam veteran, remains in Iowa’s Civil Commitment Unit for Sexual Offenders at Cherokee Mental Health Institute since 1999.
