Jobless man pounds bat at bay in Missouri employment office

Reginald Smith 22 pounded a black baseball bat on a desk and held about 30 people at bay at a Missouri Division of Employment Security office. He complained his $88 weekly unemployment checks were cut and blamed staff for his hardship. He left after a minute or two and was arrested at a relative’s home for destruction of property. Witnesses said the bat sounded like a shotgun and frightened a receptionist. The incident may echo a similar event in Kansas City Kansas where a man toppled a $4,500 computer terminal.
