Tax on Out of State Purchases Still In Effect Despite Ruling
The Iowa Supreme Court ruled the state cannot require out of state mail order firms to collect the 2 percent use tax. Montgomery Ward and Sears challenged the levy. Tax officials will still collect tax on new car registrations, and Iowans buying outside Iowa remain personally liable for the tax. The ruling targets mail order collection, not the tax itself.
