Market notes show hogs trading 10 to 25 cents higher with salable receipts around 7 000. Cattle mixed, sheep steady, calves and vealers largely unchanged. Trade active with buyers and sellers adjusting to firming hog values amid reduced supplies. bulls dull and cows uneven.
Cattle arrivals include fed steers and fed heifers with prices steady to firm while cows and bulls show declines. Dealers, stockers, and feeders are largely unchanged. Prime and high choice steers fetch around 23.25 per cwt, with most 21.00 to 22.50 and weights 392 to 1392 pounds. Cows bring 12.25 to 14.50, bulls 14.00 to 16.00, and dealer top near 26.00.
Sioux City cattle receipts 3 700 calves 50 slaughter steers mostly steady to 25 cents lower heifers steady. Small showing of choice steers 21.00 to 22.25, one load choice to mostly prime 1 165 lbs 23.25, commercial and good 17.50 24.00. Lots of choice heifers 850 lbs and down 21.00 41.50, commercial and good 16.00 19.00.
In Kansas cattle market notes, 500 calves 100 loads, market steady to easier with light cleanup. A load of high choice 1215 lb fed steers at 23.00 and a load of high choice around 875 lb fed heifers at 22.75.
Des Moines reports receipts of 30 000 for Thursday 34 000 for week ago and 34 000 for year to date with active market. Prices for butchers steady to 35 cents higher and mostly 25 cents higher than mid week. Sows steady to 25 cents higher while barrows and gilts show varied gains across weight classes with 180 to 550 pound ranges cited.

Two charges of violating the city fire code against Jay McNamara filed March 9 were dismissed Thursday by Judge William Matias. He was charged with permitting paint spraying in a poorly ventilated area and improper paint storage at 800 First Avenue NE. Fire department officials reported compliance with code requirements and recommended dismissal. McNamara was required to pay court costs.

J C Blodgett of Cedar Rapids, labor representative on the Iowa Employment Security Commission, defended the commission's jobless pay rulings at the Iowa Federation of Labor convention in Des Moines. He argued court interpretations of other laws give authority to decide in favor of the employee when doubts arise about compensation eligibility.
A. C. Kauffmann, a Dubuque county contractor, won 2000 in a district court verdict against G. H. Schmidt of Elkader over a 12500 house dispute. Schmidt had sued for 5000, claiming Kauffmann did not finish the house. Kauffmann counterclaimed for 26000 for lost equipment and materials. Trial before Judge W. H. Antes lasted seven days with the verdict delivered after midnight.

The interstate Commerce Commission permits a new 10 cent per hundred pickup and delivery charge and allows tariffs for the fee while canceling the current five percent basic shipping deduction. Shippers may pick up or deliver shipments themselves to avoid the charge, with June tariffs to be finalized after further railroad action. Organizations including Cedar Rapids bureau protested the prior 12 to 45 cent proposal.
The federal court in Dubuque reported dismissal of two damage suits and issued judgments in others. W E Hartman and Virginia Hartman won 5615 against Don L Nelson for a 1951 auto accident near West Liberty. Dean Ard of 1411 Eighteenth Street SE was fined 25 dollars plus costs in traffic court after pleading guilty to a charge of operating a vehicle under control. He was arrested at 12 20 a m following an accident at First Avenue and Twentieth Street E. Ard reportedly lost control, skidded 135 feet and struck Irene Freeman of 2715 Franklin Avenue NE who was turning left.
Davenport Iowa veteran leaders urged congress to oppose further cuts to Veterans Administration hospital funding. VFW commander Clifford J Dawson called on Iowa’s 200 posts to oppose reductions and support restoration of funds marked for veterans’ medical facilities.
