Hedy Lamarr Drama Faces British Censors in Tropics Film
Censor trouble in England and the British empire surrounds Lady of the Tropics starring Hedy Lamarr and Robert Taylor. Producers aim to tailor the picture to fit perceived exotica while avoiding interracial marriage on screen. The plot centers on Lamarr as an Indo Chinese half caste who marries an American, with villain Joseph Schildkraut plotting a passport conflict. In other notes, Lionel Barrymore and others completed scenes for On Borrowed Time, and a big plantation sequence for Way Down South features 175 Negro dancers. Clarence Muse directs from the sideline as a lively set fills with music and chaos.
