George Lorence of Lisbon fined $5 plus costs for operating a motor vehicle without a driver’s license and $3 and costs for operating without proper brakes. Leo Boddicker of Newhall fined $5 plus costs for overload on a truck.
Marriage licenses were issued to Dale Isaac McConaughy of Anamosa and Mildred Marie Ulirick of Cedar Rapids Warren Stambaugh of Marion and Louise Klaner of Cedar Rapids Russell Sheetz and Elizabeth Meeks both of Cedar Rapids Charlie L Guzzle of Marion and Blanche D Toeller of Cedar Rapids.
Mary Jane McRaith of 361 Woodland Drive SE was fined 10 dollars and costs for speeding. Ralph Kennedy, 49, of 1431 First Avenue East, fined 10 dollars and costs for intoxication in a parked car. Paul Brown, 45, of 1414 First Avenue East, fined 25 dollars and costs for disturbing the peace of his family with 15 dollars suspended. He must pay 10 dollars and costs.
Virginia surgeon Dr. Thomas Wheeldon described cellophane as a safe surgical substitute for human tissue. He reported success in sheathing a severed tendon, bridging a five inch gap with silk, and wrapping the tendon in a tube of thin film to restore thumb function in an 18 year old, with near normal flexion and excellent extension.
The Iowa Supreme Court Friday overruled a ruling by Judge H C Ring in favor of Mrs Sadie W Palmer Cedar Rapids. The case involved her income tax appeal arguing Illinois realty income was not taxable by the Iowa Board of Assessment and Review.
Andrew Dyrland, 41, of Cedar Rapids, pled not guilty before Judge H C Ring to a common theft indictment carrying a potential seven year term on third conviction. He failed to post a $1500 bond after arrest for allegedly taking a jack screw from M Goldberg on May 10. Prior petty larceny convictions from December 1937 and June 1938 are cited.
A charge of falsely uttering a $35 check against Don A. Carlson of Madison Wisconsin was dismissed on state recommendation and at the request of the complaining witness Saturday before Judge H C Ring. The check dated January 21 for Kenmore grocery had been paid. Carlson waived preliminary hearing April 27 and posted a $500 bond.

A five dollar check issue is held by the Grundy Center sheriff's office as part of a local matter.
Velda Smart of Cedar Rapids filed a motion for a new trial alleging discovery of new evidence from conversations between Fred C. Herman and M. C. Kubik. The suit seeks title to property in the Herman estate under an agreement. Judge Heiserman ruled May 4 for the defendants George R. Liddle and D. C. Herndon, dismissing the petition. An affidavit by Kubik accompanies the motion.
Taken into Justice Winfield A. White's court at Marion by Deputy Sheriff Harlan Snyder Saturday Otis Bailey 24 of Lisbon charged with unlawful retention of a rented storage battery pled not guilty and bond was set at 100 dollars.
A defense motion to dismiss a partition action by Charles H. Bunger and Chester C. Bunger against Chester L. Charles and others was filed Saturday. The motion argues the petition was not on file at the time specified by the original notice.
Marjorie Hanson seeks a divorce from Melvin Hanson on cruel and inhuman grounds. The couple married in Cedar Rapids on July 16, 1930. Mrs. Hanson also asks custody of their son.
Otto L. Schluter filed a dismissal with prejudice as to the Iowa Leather company on Saturday in a legal services expense claim matter that had been filed the prior week.
Vincenc Kubovec, receiver of the Iowa Finance Corporation, seeks a 470.33 judgment in a note case. Defendant named is J. F. Scolaro.
Dr. Lawrence J. Halpin and Dr. Charles Day will leave early Sunday for St. Louis to attend the national convention of the American Medical Association.

Joseph Abodeely Cedar Rapids filed the information for alleged embezzlement of 183 05 dollars worth of rugs bought on a conditional sales contract.
United Commercial Travelers Local Council 161 will hold its annual May day breakfast Sunday from 7 to 9 a.m. at the Bever Park pavilion. Members, families, and friends are invited. Hunter T. Baylor is chairman. after breakfast, entertainment and games are planned.
The signing of the contract followed a warning from Lewis to dissenting mine operators. He urged keeping mines closed and avoiding violence or the use of weapons. He cited UMWA sentiment in six districts favoring the pact and noted Gov Chandler might deploy National Guard in Harlan County if needed. The agreement was not perfect but is the best possible under the circumstances. Robison thanked both sides for tolerance and bearance as the conference closed.
Thieves pried a door lock at a Cedar Rapids area Boy Scout camp near Waubeek in the last few days and carried away a five gallon gasoline can and two Model A Ford trailer wheels. Sheriff Jim Smith was notified by local Scout officials on Friday.

Saturday evening's program will feature musical requests by Paul Levin and Bob Findlay who have conducted services for two weeks. A 4:15 p.m. Sunday meeting and an evening service conclude the series. The service honors Mother's Day with Levin's message "Mother, the Queen of America" and gifts for the oldest and youngest mothers in attendance.

Des Moines reports both sides will assemble at 10 a.m. Tuesday to negotiate union contracts. Sam Ballantyne, president of the Iowa Coal Operators Association, announced Friday night that each side will be represented by a fourteen member committee. He said Iowa mines will remain closed pending the outcome of the conference.
Army orders announced in Washington send Lieutenant Colonel Louis A Falligant Inf from Iowa City Iowa to Madison Wisconsin in a transfer effective immediate action and pending assignment.
Enthusiastic attendance heard Dr. Fred Hoadlett Albee, president-elect of the International College of Surgeons, present a detailed account of bone grafting with film demonstrations. The program included remarks by Dr. Arthur Steindler and Dr. Winnett Orr, with discussion by area doctors on complications and bacteriophage use in wartime treatment.
Warsaw refused a Soviet plan for a four power mutual assistance pact with Britain France the U S S R and Poland saying it could be read as encirclement of Germany. Poland seeks neighborly relations while hoping for a settlement of Hitler demands over Danzig and the Polish Corridor. Izvestia had floated the pact including Britain France Russia and Poland.
Los Angeles report states Bert Wheeler, comedian of film and vaudeville fame, is sued for divorce by Sally Haines, his wife of two years. She alleges he stayed out at night, was moody, and refused to chat. they separated on April 20.
Pittsburgh AP reports that over 300 Pitt coeds voted for a dream man who is sincere rather than sophisticated. They pictured an ideal at six feet tall, 175 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes, reflecting a preference for straightforward appeal.
Nellie Hepker wife of Harry Hepker died at 1106 E Avenue NW Cedar Rapids after a long illness. Born in Shellsburg 61 years ago she lived nearby all her life before moving to Cedar Rapids three months ago. She married Harry Hopker on November 16 1937 in Clinton and is survived by daughter Mrs Claire Oxley son William Pisel two sisters Mrs Nora Waddle Mary Ashlock Mrs Anna Lint Mrs Stella Hoagland and Mrs Maude Gunn two brothers Roy Hanover George Hanover. She was a Baptist church member. Funeral will be at Turner chapel Monday at 2 pm conducted by Rev Marion Williams with burial in Shellsburg cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
Mrs Tressie Croulek wife of Anton Croulek of Oxford died at her home after a long illness. Born in Johnson county 58 years ago she lived in Cedar Rapids before marriage. Noah Good 1138 Tenth Street SE died at 12 45 p.m. Friday after a lingering illness. Born at LaPorte City June 25 1879 he lived in Cedar Rapids several years, moving from Brandon. Survived by three children Mrs Joseph Holecek Cedar Rapids John of Vinton and adopted son Fred Carey Cedar Rapids three grandchildren Darlene Louise Holecek and Thomas Carey Cedar Rapids and three brothers Thomas Good La Porte City Harry Good Vinton Elmer Good St Louis. George V. Bartholmey, 41, a salesman from 812 Fourth Avenue San Francisco, died after a month long illness. A Cedar Rapids resident for 17 years, he came from Chicago. Survived by wife Gladys daughter Merilyn Cedar Rapids son George Bangor Mich mother sister Miss Lillian and brother Arthur of Chicago. Private funeral at Moon family chapel at 3 p.m. conducted by Rev. Marion H. Williams followed by cremation.

The body of B F Childs a former Cedar Rapids resident who died at his Monrovia California home on Thursday will arrive in Cedar Rapids on Thursday May 18 and be taken to Turner mortuary where friends may call. Funeral arrangements to be announced later.

Chicago AP reports John P. Quinn, 62, was convicted Friday night of killing his brother in law Dr. Gordon E. Mordoff, a principal figure in the 1936 Sonny Boy custody fight. Jury imposes 14 years in state penitentiary as minimum punishment.
Members of the Y W C A morning gym class concluded spring term with a picnic luncheon at Mrs. Roy E. Curray’s home 2200 Linden arive SE. The event honored class instructor Miss Lorraine Nelson and pianist Mrs. Vernon Ilen, joined by Miss Betty Beardsley and several spouses.
Miss Anne Sarahon Hooley of Kansas City will speak at the regional conference of the National Conference of Catholic Women in Dubuque on May 16 and 17. The senior and junior groups of the Degree of Honor lodge met at Pythian hall for the annual Mother's day program. Evelyn Comried presided as president of the Sunshine group. readings, solos, and instrumental numbers were presented by members. Each mother received a handkerchief parasol and refreshments were served by Mrs. Mulvihill, Netherton, and Noble.

The Lincoln P T A met Tuesday afternoon with Mrs G W Reger presiding. Mrs George Merrifield reported on the northeast P T A conference at Belle Plaine and committees gave reports. Kindergarten and first grade pupils sang and Billie Dawn Lebkisher played two accordion selections. Silver Chain circle of the King's Daughters met at Mrs. W. O. Shelquist's home for a dessert luncheon. Mrs. O. J. Larson led devotions, with Mrs. Shelquist presiding. They sewed layettes for Sunshine Mission, presented roller skates to Community House children, sent $7 to camp for a girl, and mailed linen to a Fort Madison home. Officers elected: Mrs. Harry May president, Mrs. G. H. Lowe vice-president, Mrs. Verle Jones secretary, Mrs. J. Lindley treasurer.

Smith led arrangements while Otterbein guild directed by Miss Lucille Stauffer presented a playlet. Toasts by Bernice Cubbison and Mrs. Oak Smith, a solo by Thelma Hoover, and a dedication service by Miss Jennie E. Post with a bouquet for Mrs. J. T. Stewart. Dinner served by church men.

An NLRB hearing will decide if CIO or AFL CIO is the bargaining unit for LaPlant Choate Manufacturing workers. The State Department has postponed issuing passports for Fritz Kuhn leader of the German American Bund and his associates Fritz Schwiering and Gerhard Wilhelm Kunz since early March. New York City authorities are investigating their affairs, and New York Mayor LaGuardia urged delaying action until the probe ends. A department official said passport action can be deferred when investigations by local or state authorities might lead to indictment, noting that passports are not a citizen’s right and that the secretary of state may grant or refuse at will.
Fritz Kuhn president of the German American bund files a 5 million dollar libel suit in federal court against Warner Brothers for The Confessions of a Nazi Spy. He seeks an injunction against further distribution and names John Wexley Milton Krimes and Leon Turrou as defendants alleging false statements. The bund leader says the film libels the organization and cites 18 script excerpts as libelous defamation. He describes the bund as patriotic Americans of German birth or parentage upholding the flag and U S laws.
