Army member recalled as having served since March 1970 in Vietnam while parents Mr. and Mrs. Robert Frasher of Worthington and siblings Robert of Dubuque Philip Patrick Janine Joan Janet all at home are listed along with maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. John Dehner of Dubuque as survivors.
An Iowa crash on Highway 30 near the Clarence rest area injured Lanny McNamara of DuMont. A semi loaded with livestock collided with Kirk Meyer’s stalled car driven by Meyer, sending Meyer's car airborne and the semis into a ditch. Several hogs and cattle died. others were rounded up. No charges filed.
Services are pending at Kramer funeral home in Dyersville for Lt. Gary D. Frasher of Worthington. The 21 year old, born October 6 1948 and a 1966 West Dubuque high school graduate, was killed when his plane was shot down by ground forces in Vietnam last Friday. He had recently entered military service.
Iowa and Northern Iowa moved to let students leave and receive semester credit or an incomplete while Iowa State kept the traditional path. Presidents urged accommodation for student activists amid campus turmoil over the Vietnam war and recent student deaths.
Violent clashes followed a downtown march ending at the Augusta municipal building where a Georgia flag was torn down and burned. Guardsmen blocked streets, bayonets fixed but sheathed, while jailers reported arrests likely in the hundreds. A 16 year old prisoner, Charles Oatman, was beaten to death by cellmates. two others, including Sammy Lee Parks, 17, were charged with murder. Authorities say officers deny involvement and claim suspects beat Oatman.
Severe weather swept across Iowa with tornado watches and heavy rainfall. In Atlantic a mobile home overturned trapping a girl briefly, a house and garage destroyed, trees and power lines toppled, windows broken, and two inches of rain with higher totals in rural areas. Nearby Centerville saw a severe electrical storm with two fires from lightning. Four-inch hail hit Dysart and a brief Cedar Rapids tornado was reported with no damage. Scattered showers and storms expected to continue into Wednesday with highs in the 70s and 80s.
Jay Harris, managing editor of Lubbock Avalanche Journal, recalls a major addition wall blown away by a tornado that smashed the building in seconds. Winds along the tunnel surged past 100 mph as Braniff canceled flights after the control tower was destroyed. Smiley elementary School became a temporary morgue while water pumping stations failed and officials issued a drinking water emergency.

A spring storm hit Cedar Rapids causing outages across the northeast, knocking out power for up to nine minutes in the downtown core and leaving many residents and businesses without electricity for about an hour. Lightning damaged the Iowa Electric Light and Power plant on Sixth Street, triggering fires and bus-system damage, while Northwestern Bell maintained service with auxiliary power.
Maurice Meade, 23, of 600 Fifth Avenue SE, was in fair condition at Mercy hospital with a stab wound to the upper back after an argument at a laundromat at Fifth Avenue and Sixth Street SE Monday night. Duane Hansen, 22, Meade’s roommate, was charged with assault with intent to commit murder, appeared in municipal court and was given until Thursday to waiver or demand a preliminary hearing. Bond was set at $5,000. Hansen was held in Linn County jail.
Cedar Rapids city council authorized the planning department to schedule the sale of 1,063,000 in preliminary loan notes for the Neighborhood Development Program’s first year. Bids from loan sources open July 7. The city will receive a 1,063,000 federal grant for rehabilitation work, continuing a policy used in prior urban renewal efforts. Begun April 1, the NDP targets rehabilitating Oak Hill Jackson and Riverside areas.
William G. Harrington II and Judith K. Harrington of Linn county sue Northwestern Bell Telephone Co and David Gerald Ramm for 280000 dollars in alleged permanent injuries from a June 25 1968 car motorcycle crash at the Third street and Third avenue SW intersection. Judith Harrington also seeks 27500 dollars for loss of consortium.
Raypicket reports a quiet campus morning as authorities consider releasing enforcement personnel. About 200 highway patrolmen remain near Iowa City to prevent violence, with Ray noting unknown violence prevented by support. He has not met with students but says he welcomes future discussions with dissidents.
