Vinton voters pass a 350000 high school bond by 1148 to 688, 63.3 percent, lifting total district funding to 650000 with 20 year bonds at 2.2 mills. The measure adds to a prior 300000 bond, funds building complete with site grading and equipment for the largest consolidated district serving 1192 pupils.
Volunteers in Tipton will start work on the town's newly acquired park site Saturday. The 30 plus acre area includes 20 acres bought by the board of education years ago and the rest by the Tipton park board. Plans call for a playground, picnic area and a ball diamond.
In Springville seniors 23 will hold baccalaureate Sunday in the high school auditorium. Eighth grade graduation and senior class night follow Tuesday with commencement Thursday. Alumni supper planned for next Friday evening.
Milwaukee Road discontinues passenger service between Cedar Rapids and Ottumwa effective May 15. Trains Nos. 103 and 108 will run only on Sundays before ending. For details, contact a Milwaukee Road ticket agent.
A 618.09 dollar gift from Cornell College students was presented to George and Alice Brown in the chapel on Friday. The money came from donations after George's Place burned April 21, a cafe near the campus that served as a student hangout. The funds helped rebuild the grill, with benefits and dances raised, reopening May 1, one week after the fire.
Davenport AP reports after seven hours the jury in Hugo Sierk’s case failed to reach a verdict and was dismissed by District Judge W L Keck. Sierk, a former Scott county supervisor, testified he had little more to drink before his October 1948 arrest and will be retried in a later term per County Attorney Clark Fittsef.
Fayette county supervisors consider a bond to raze and replace a damaged section of the county home after the May 5 wind storm. The roof blew off a north adjoining section, 48 by 68 percent by 30 feet, with 67 year old brick walls too weak for a permanent roof. A temporary roof is in place and the bond vote is expected soon.
Des Moines AP Murray B. Bicknell an 18 year old from Newton failed to obtain a temporary driver license. His license had been suspended for a year after he led police on a 90 mile per hour chase last November. He told the official his boss was going on vacation and asked for a exception, but was refused.
Chief of Police John Reisner, who joined Grinnell in 1949, resigned Friday to return to Oelwein. No reason for the departure was provided.
A Des Moines AP report states the Iowa state parole board will take several weeks before issuing recommendations on commutations for life term prisoners. Gov Beardsley requested review of all lifers and possible commutations. The board will not group recommendations and is awaiting interviews with some lifers. Over 200 inmates hold life terms. commutations require the governor's action.
The Iowa City student council votes to abolish race religion and color questions on University of Iowa admission blanks. The resolution, backed by a racial equality group, is to be sent to President Virgil M. Hancher. Liberal Arts Dean Dewey B. Stuitt opposes, arguing the data serves individuals interested.
Mary Danielsen resigns from Tama city council effective June 1 amid council discord. She declined to comment but hinted more would be revealed at Tuesday night meeting. Danielsen, first ward member in her first term, submitted resignation to Mayor Carnal.
The Oelwein Chamber of Commerce building committee postponed contract letting for a new civic center because current funds cannot meet bids from local contractors.

Des Moines reports 61 people killed at Iowa railroad grade crossings in 1949, up from 57 in 1948, with 118 accidents causing 120 injuries. Most crashes involved cars, and 32 incidents saw vehicles strike the train side. Daylight hours and clear weather dominated, while signals and crossing approaches drew criticism.
The office of Senator Bourke Hickenlooper announced GSA loans for advanced planning of street and sewer work. Vinton receives 2320 dollars and Shenandoah 5280 dollars in approved funds.
