The Agriculture Department warns crops may be below average with 1950 wheat output likely under 1 billion bushels and fruits such as peaches scarce. Wholesale food prices rise to 16 month highs, risking a shift in farm price supports.
R W Bell of Osceola says Iowa farmers show growing support for the Brannan farm program. He cites six weeks of rising interest fueled by Al Loveland's Senate bid and President Truman's Iowa visit and Lincoln speech. Farmers worry over falling farm income and doubt current policy.
A statewide contest to find Iowa's most representative farm girl will be conducted this summer by the Press Columnists of Iowa and the Iowa State fair. District winners from eight districts will compete at the State fair in August where the Queen of the Land will be crowned and receive a California trip with expenses for her and her mother paid by the State fair board.
Amana reports show West Amana leading April production with 1 180 pounds of milk and 43 7 pounds of fat per cow. Middle Amana ranks second farm with 1 176 pounds milk and 4 20 pounds fat. H herd sits third at 1 125 pounds milk and 41 1 pounds fat per cow.
Independence reports the 101 cow Holstein herd at the state hospital averaged 421 pounds of butterfat and 11 602 pounds of milk in the last year. Milkings were three times daily with testing supervised by Iowa State College in cooperation with the national Holstein headquarters.

Benton County extension director Kenneth Kramer led a rat control demonstration at the Herman Haerther farm near Atkins outlining a four step program. Clean up rat harbors prebaiting poisoning and rat proofing buildings with emphasis on elevating items off the ground and removing debris. Prebaiting used two pounds of bait to gauge rat numbers guiding poison quantities and types including anta squill and barium carbonate. Farm animals must be kept away from bait and uneaten bait collected daily. Rat proofing via hardware cloth and tin prevents burrowing and foundations should extend two feet to deter rats.
A Cedar Rapids meeting of 17 dairymen launched plans for a milk producers bargaining group. They condemn a recent one cent per quart price cut, say it lowers producer returns about 45 cents per quart, and vow a mass meeting next week to coordinate action with all Cedar Rapids market producers.
A planning committee for the Jersey cattle show set for June 10 in Strawberry Point will meet at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Legion Hall to finalize arrangements. Members urge all interested in showing cattle to attend.

Milk production April 505 million pounds, lowest period since 1937. milk per cow 454 pounds in April.
