Reagan Fights Trade Protectionism Across Party Lines
President Reagan denounced protectionist calls as a quick fix that could cripple international trade. Industry groups pressed for quotas on foreign steel while officials considered France’s fixed exchange rate proposal and U S savings bond sales rose in April.

Cudahy Signals Omaha Plant Continuation Amid Iowa Closings
Cudahy Specialty Foods plans to keep the Omaha plant running if the two Iowa meatpacking plants close on June 30. Acting general counsel Robert Kuhbach said Omaha operations won’t change, but the firm won’t return to ham manufacturing. The Iowa plants in Independence and West Union process ham and bone ham, amid a ham operation in difficulty from import competition and high costs. The company, a General Host subsidiary, posted a first quarter loss 1983, less severe than the 1982 fourth quarter drop tied to a dry-sausage plant strike where about 160 union workers walked out. Strike continues with nonunion replacements.
