Rick Mears led practice at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with a 204.498 mph lap while Bobby Unser weighs his near retirement return to a driver role with Patrick Racing. Johnny Rutherford injured but expected back soon as Gordon Johncock, Teo Fabi and others run fast. If both Al Unser and Al Unser Jr. qualify, it would mark a first for a father and son in the Indy 500.
