A $400 power riding mower was stolen from the Vigortone Co lot at 931 Blairs Ferry Road NE on Thursday or Friday, police report. Gene R. Potter, 25, of Anamosa, was arrested Friday night and charged with reckless driving. He reportedly ran a flashing red light at Second avenue and Tenth street SE, then turned right onto Second and sped at 50 mph in a 30 mph zone. Potter refused to sign a promise to appear and was jailed in lieu of $110 bond.
London AP reports Fred Bellenger aged 73, former secretary of war and longtime Labour elder statesman, has died.
In Vijayawada India a wedding tent tragedy left at least 55 dead and over 200 injured after a gasoline lamp toppled by guests ignited a coconut leaf enclosure. The bride and groom escaped by jumping the wall as flames and a crowd stampede trapped attendees. Water shortages and extreme heat worsened the disaster.
Douglas Litch, 26, on work release from Anamosa Men's Reformatory in Cedar Rapids, was arrested after allegedly giving his girlfriend dresses from Killian's Shoe Repair that had been sent to Armstrong's for zipper work. Detectives traced the dresses with Killian's labels to a theft, and the girlfriend, detained by employees, said Litch claimed the garments were to be thrown away. He faces larceny charges.
New York reports the death of Philippa Bevans, a character actress on Broadway and film aged 55. She starred last year with Paul Ford in What Did We Do Wrong and originated Mrs. Pearce in My Fair Lady, a role she played for over two years, with television dramas also in her credits.
Eight people suffered minor injuries in five Cedar Rapids traffic incidents Friday. A three car crash at First avenue and Eighteenth street involved an Iowa patrol car, causing three injuries and one charge to Albert R. Ullrich Jr. Ullrich was charged with failing to control and was treated and released.
Delegates at the 116th Episcopal Diocese of Iowa convention rejected a flat denunciation of U S policy in Vietnam. They approved a resolution backing the Paris peace talks and the peace workers, while outlining seven conditions for Christian participation in war. The move to table the resolution avoided a definitive church policy.
