Forecast notes increasing cloudiness with showers likely in the south and across most of the state Tuesday. Monday will be cooler with highs around 50s to mid 60s, a partly cloudy outlook midweek. Births, divorces, and court actions appear alongside local fire alerts, traffic fines, and funeral notices for area residents.
City officials hear residents oppose two proposed rezoning changes. Speakers cited impacts on neighborhoods and traffic, while opponents demand further study and alternative plans. The council pledged careful consideration before voting in coming meetings.
Property owners filed objections to two zoning changes with Cedar Rapids city council Monday. Sixteen signers protested Carlton K. Smith's plan for commercial zoning at Mt. Vernon road and Twenty-fifth street SE, while forty petitioners opposed Smith and Vernon Apartments Inc for a commercial permit on similar grounds. A separate protest by five owners challenged Charles P. Vernier's request for light industrial zoning on 11 First Avenue lots near the Milwaukee rail line, citing impact on Lakeside home sites. Council referred both matters to the City Plan Commission for study and action.
The Cedar Rapids post office announced that a term contract for carrying the Washington Cedar Rapids star route has been awarded to William F. Henry of Washington. The term runs July 1 this year to June 30, 1955 at $7,000 per year, with six round trips per week. It replaces a temporary arrangement.
Roosevelt High School student council issued a unanimous resolution backing teachers and administrators amid parent accusations of unwarranted disciplinary actions. The council said discipline has been fair and that students showing willingness to cooperate receive opportunities to improve. Signing were President David Mitchell and Secretary Kathy Miller. The school board had ordered an investigation into each cited case, a probe that is ongoing.
The Brotherhood of Electrical Workers reached a contract with Cedar Rapids contractors raising wages by 13 cents an hour. It marks the second Building Trades Council member to conclude talks since contracts expired April 30. Nine of eleven unions remain unsettled, with plumbers iron workers and cement finishers on strike and bricklayers unaffiliated with the council also without a contract. The electricians currently earn $2.65 per hour.
James Bowker, 57, of 1007 Fourth Avenue SE, was charged with a third offense drunken driving after a Saturday night collision at Second Avenue and Fifteenth Street SE. Court records show previous convictions on March 17, 1941, and March 26, 1951.
A second offense drunk driving count against Stuart Fairbanks, 38, of 621 First Street SW, was dismissed by Judge Floyd Philbrick after the county attorney’s office cited lack of evidence. A lesser charge of intoxication in a public place was substituted. Fairbanks was arrested Feb 7 when a Marion patrolman found him asleep in a car on Blair’s Ferry road.
Donald T. Ballou, 28, pled guilty to lewd acts with a child. Judge Floyd Philbrick imposed a one year suspended sentence for the November offense involving a minor girl. Ballou had earlier pled not guilty and was free on bond.
The will of J. F. Womochel who died April 18 was admitted to probate Monday. Gertrude Kuba, a daughter, was named executrix without bonds.
George and Ethel M. Coster were granted a default judgment Monday in a forcible entry and detainer action against Robert E. Barnett.
In Burlingame California friends wish Robert Bayne luck as he begins work as a licensed private eye. Bayne is noted as the only blind private detective in the country.
David Jordan 15, son of Mr and Mrs Howard Jordan of 638 Fifteenth Avenue SW, will receive the Eagle Scout badge Monday night in a Troop 19 court of honor at Lincoln School. Larry Kimball will present. He joined Scouting as a Cub and became Tenderfoot in 1949 and now serves as junior assistant Scoutmaster. he plans to attend the national jamboree in California this summer.
Planned Parenthood clinic slated at St. Luke's hospital Wednesday at 1 p.m. The YMCA hosts lunch and social planning board events. Kiwanis speaker H. T. Muzumdar of Cornell College. Campership and recreation committee meetings planned. Local arrests include Frank Medinger fined $100 for reckless driving. Tulips bloom at Bever Park. Doris Stockwell arrested for petty larceny. Rotary funds for foreign exchange student program. Cedar Rapids groups contribute.
Special to The Gazette Otto Newell a farmer from four miles southwest of here suffered a back fracture early Sunday when the horse he was riding stumbled. Mrs Newell alerted when he failed to return and helped him to the house before he was taken to Mercy hospital Anamosa.
Eight downtown Cedar Rapids business offices were prowled over the weekend. Detectives checked occupants in the Dows and Higley buildings and added to prior incidents in the American building. About $150 was reported missing, with a $120 loss from The Mackabees insurance office. Other targets included Moorhead Construction, Attorney Edgar King, Pennsylvania Mutual Life, Mutual Benefit Insurance of Omaha, Randall Nazette Kreuter, Dr. Kenneth Heck, and the Whelpley insurance office. Detectives were also investigating a report in the Paramount building.
A northeast Iowa tornado damaged the Ventura area with injuries including Mr. and Mrs. J G Baker who suffered leg fractures. Another resident, Robert Dunbar, 20, of Leland, had a fractured rib when his car was hurled. Destruction reported in Fertile Hanlontown and Northwood includes 21 barns or sheds destroyed or damaged. Cooler weather followed with showers expected, Cedar Rapids saw a high of 80 and a 0.05 inch rainfall.
Marshalltown police report a safe was damaged at Mickle Furniture Company on Sunday night and $480 stolen. Officials say it did not appear to be amateur work. Two other Marshalltown break ins occurred that night with no losses at a Swift Company produce station and a motor sales firm.
Special to The Gazette. Three Chicago teenagers were nabbed in Decorah after a gas station robbery in Ossian Saturday night. Attendant Carl Schroeder said the trio bought $1 of gas at 7:15 p.m., forced him into the wash room and warned he would be killed if he left for 10 minutes. They stole $100 from the till and fled. State patrol arrested the youths about 8 p.m. in Decorah. they are jailed. Two suspects are 16 and the third 15.
Paul Schoenbeck a Franklin High School teacher at 415 Twenty second street NE won the district 19 speech contest of Toastmasters International. He will represent the district next month in the zone contest at Minneapolis following the district event held Saturday night at Boone.
Dr. Andrew E. Kurth, pastor of Westminster Presbyterian, was chosen president of the Cedar Rapids and Marion Ministerial Association at a Monday meeting. New officers include Rev. James M. Webb as vice president and Rev. Norris L. Wogen as secretary treasurer. Speakers were Dr. Albion Roy King of Cornell College on The Problem for Evil and Clyde Parker who spoke on moral and spiritual values in Cedar Rapids schools.
Frank J. Trachta 72 longtime Cedar Rapids resident died in an Iowa City hospital after a brief illness. He was born July 22, 1880, a retired Rock Island Railroad car inspector and a member of Prokop Velky C.S.A. and Woodmen of the World. Surviving daughters, grandchildren, great grandchildren, sisters and brothers. Services Tuesday at Brosh chapel with burial in Czech National cemetery. Friends may call.
Joseph Pazour 70 of 1918 C Street SW Cedar Rapids died at home Sunday at 7 15 p.m. after a long illness. Retired blacksmith born November 1 1882 in Czechoslovakia member of Karel IV ZCBJ. Survived by wife Julia Valis Pazour four sons Joseph Fred Charles and Pfc Robert A Pazour in Germany two daughters Mrs William Kosina and Mrs Ronald Kalous two brothers Frank and Charles of Cedar Rapids and sister Emma Pazour of Czechoslovakia services at Brosh chapel Thursday at 2 p.m with visitation after 6 p.m Tuesday.
Frank Chaloupka 78 of Ely died at home at 4 45 a m Monday after a long illness. A retired farmer and longtime Ely area resident born in Bohemia October 5 1874 he was survived by wife Mary a daughter Mrs Jermill Detert of Solon route 4 a son Charles of Fairfax route 1 four grandchildren and five great grandchildren a sister Mrs Frances Kroul of Ely and a brother Joseph of near Solon The Brush chapel will hold services at 2 p m Wednesday with Rev Zdenek F Pauk and burial will be in Oakland cemetery at Solon Friends may call at the chapel Tuesday.
Thomas Henry Bland retired cement contractor from Moline died Saturday at his daughter Mrs Charles L Kidd s home 833 Nineteenth Street SE. Services will be held at Moline Memorial Cemetery at 11 am Tuesday with burial in Moline. Body was moved from Turner chapel to Moline Monday afternoon. No services in Cedar Rapids.
William Holosek aged 48 of 115 Fifteenth Avenue SE died at home Sunday from a heart ailment. He was born in Cedar Rapids on May 8 1905 and served in the U S Army during World War II. He is survived by his mother Mrs
Barbara Holecek of Cedar Rapids is survived by a daughter Miss Norma Ann Holecek of Homestead Florida and two brothers Frank of Cedar Rapids and Wesley of Burbank. Services at Kuba funeral home with time to be announced. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Tuesday.

In Holly Springs, Mississippi drivers ignore parking meters. An out-of-town motorist paid a nickel to test them, a bank clerk said payment was unnecessary, and Police Chief Warren confirmed the claim. The meters were sold by a super salesman but fell out of favor and enforcement stopped.
FBI agents join the investigation of two grain thefts from government storage bins near Extra Audubon County Sheriff Glen McLaughlin said Monday. About 600 bushels of corn were taken in each incident with a prior tapping on April 21.
The Most Rev John P Cedy auxiliary bishop of St Louis will deliver the sermon at baccalaureate services for graduates of St Ambrose and Marycrest colleges and St Ambrose division of nursing on May 31. Commencement exercises will follow the same day on the St Ambrose campus in Davenport.

DES MOINES The Iowa Executive Council weighed new state employee rules after approval in January but lack of legal force due to pending attorney general approval. Atty. Gen. Leo Hoegh signed off April 30 and changes by State Personnel Director Arthur Wallace followed. Main change allows the director to decide if competitive exams are held. The council also approved shorter summer lunch periods and staggered hours from 8 a.m. to 4 30 p.m. A bid request was approved for 30 cars to replace high mileage private vehicles.
State Sen. Stanley Hart of Keokuk was named chairman as the Iowa liquor warehouse advisory committee met in Des Moines. The panel, created by the legislature, seeks a possible new warehouse for the State Liquor Control Commission with a $500,000 appropriation. The group, including three members from each house, will seek legal guidance on land purchase versus state land use with liquor commissioners advising.
Methodist Bishop F. Gerald Ensley of Des Moines will deliver the commencement address at Simpson College in Indianola on May 31. The event marks the college’s graduation exercises with the speaker named for the ceremony.
