President Getulio Vargas led defenders at Guanabara Palace in Rio de Janeiro to crush a fascist revolt inspired by the integralist greenshirt faction. Clair Dice 50 a Cedar Rapids plumbing and heating contractor died from a cerebral hemorrhage while driving west on the First avenue bridge. He struck three parked cars on the north side opposite the Chamber of Commerce before dying en route to a hospital. The accident occurred about 11 am Wednesday. Dice is survived by his wife Effie Post two children Fred and Keith his mother and other relatives. Funeral arrangements are pending.

London ordered Ambassador Sir Robert Craigie in Tokyo to inquire about Japan’s Amoy attack. British legal experts study England’s treaty position to see if a formal protest to Japan is possible and consider approaching the United States and other Western powers for coordinated action in response to Japan’s naval advance on the southeastern Chinese port.
The Cedar Rapids school board approved a plan to raise teacher salaries by a total of 30000 annually, with increases of 11 to 200 dollars. About 390 instructors were considered and 70 were excluded for being already at or above ninety percent of the set schedule. Visual instructors will be considered for appointment later. The action was taken at a special 5 p.m. meeting held in Harold Trewin’s office to issue contracts.

Washington dispatch says President Roosevelt cannot override Interior Secretary Ickes objections blocking Germany's access to American helium for a transatlantic zeppelin. The review included Ickes Solicitor General Jackson General Craig and Admiral Leahy as key aides.
Secretary of Commerce Daniel C. Roper said a Wednesday survey suggests the recession probably has reached bottom though there is no sign of a substantial upturn. The report shows factory and mine output in April nearly unchanged from March.
