House Group Slashes USDA Budget Request
The House appropriations committee cut the agriculture department operating funds by 272.6 million to 3.6929 billion, restoring spending toward 1957 levels. It urged a two price system for farm commodities and proposed extra loans for the Rural Electrification Administration and Farmers Home Administration, while criticizing four years of farm policy. The panel said farm income fell 17.5 percent while costs rose 10 percent and warned against expanding staff.

Decision Time For Allotments Draws Near Close
AMES Farmers face final choices on whether to stay within acre age allotments for 1957. Herb Howell of Iowa State College notes eligibility for average $1.36 per bushel national support and cites a potential 1957 corn crop similar to 1956. Staying within allotments reduces risk and provides a market but can limit profits if yields are above average and may require farm reorganization in some cases.
