Albert Sylvester Waddle, 60, Cedar Rapids resident and Cedar Rapids public schools custodian for nine years, died Friday after a six month illness. Born July 5 1910 in Urbana he married Letha McQueen in 1942. Survived by wife a daughter three stepdaughters three sisters and two brothers. Funeral 3:30 p.m. Monday Turner chapel with Rev Russell Barriss, burial Cedar Memorial with military rites by Hanford Post.
Cedar Rapids resident Mrs. Martin W. Winger 75 of 1825 Blake boulevard SE died Friday after a lingering illness. Born August 27 1881 in West Lima Wisconsin she was a Presbyterian member and a past noble grand of Home Rebekah lodge No 79. Survived by son C Lee Winger. widower married June 2 1902 in Richland Center Wisconsin died March 4 1948. Services Monday 1:30 p.m. at Barta Hesser chapel with cremation at Cedar Memorial. visitation after 2 p.m. Sunday.
Wendl W. Kulish, 46, was named Cedar Rapids city assessor by a 2 to 1 vote of the city council school board and county supervisors. He will serve to Dec 31, 1959 with a $7,000 salary. He succeeds City Assessor John J. Newcomb who died March 17.
Michael Joseph Fruth age 76 of 618 H avenue NW died early Saturday. Born in Chicago he worked many years at Quaker Oats. Services at St Patrick s church at 9 a m Tuesday conducted by Rt Rev Msgr D J Lenihan. Burial at St John s. Rosary at 8 p m Monday at Brady mortuary with calling Monday.
Army recruiters in Cedar Rapids report ten East Iowans enlisted for six months active duty starting with basic training at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri. Names include Max Proctor R A Rohrer G A Roshek G A Schafbach R M Hull E R Hills Allen Bridges Dwayne Stone Raymond Walters John Roehr and Thomas Hay. Hawkeye branch Fleet Reserve officers were elected in Cedar Rapids with Suthers Horak Knox Welz Van Amburg and others appointed. Installation set for June 6 by Mathew Berchem of Chicago.
The agriculture department estimates 703,208,000 bushels of winter wheat to be harvested in 1957 based on May 1 conditions. Combined with a 175,000,000 bushel spring crop, total wheat would reach 878,208,000 bushels, well below 1956’s 997,207,000 and the 10 year average. It projects 31,233,000 acres of winter wheat harvested with 22.5 bushels per acre, and notes 15.1 percent of planted acres may not be harvested for grain.
Wesley Hardenbergh of the American Meat Institute opposed moving meat industry regulation to the Federal Trade Commission. He argued the shift would destroy benefits of a coordinated system and disrupt an integrated livestock and meat sector. He disputed claims of rapid consolidation, noting wholesale firms rose from 1,392 in 1939 to 2,367 in 1954.

Roosevelt high senior Robert J. Owen won a four year scholarship to Northwestern University worth 1000 dollars per year. He is son of Emlyn Owen and wife of 2163 Chandler Street SW. Ruby Chapman filed a $14,930 injury suit Friday in Linn County District Court naming Frank and Hazel Cargin as former landlords of 221 Tenth Street NW. She says an outside landing and stairway to her upstairs apartment collapsed on May 3, 1955 and seeks a jury trial.
Edith M Foote died April 29 leaving four brothers Willis Archie Leslie and Roy Whiting as executors without bond. Ella M Riglin died April 30 leaving 500 to nephew Frank Lewis of Omaha 400 in trust for niece Hazel Jenson remainder to sister Phoenia Lewis of Omaha and brother James Wentworth of Cedar Rapids. Clara Dobias died April 21 naming son Robert J Dobias sole heir and executor without bond. Antoinette Kriz died April 9 naming sister Mary Kriz sole heir with niece Grace H Linder named executrix without bond.
Pvt. David B. Hickenlooper, son of Senator Bourke B. Hickenlooper, Cedar Rapids, arrived in Seattle from the Far East after serving 16 months in Korea.
Betty Huber obtained a decree of annulment from her August 20 1955 marriage to Richard Huber. Patricia A Koch received an annulment decree against Curtis W Koch after filing April 13. Both petitions claimed prior marriages were not dissolved. a separate divorce suit against Fay L Anderson was dismissed.
PORT ANGELES Washington AP Charles W. Hamilton turns 107 and says smoking is all right but not a habit. He began at age seven and claims 100 years of smoking is enough after he gave it up on his 107th birthday.
The 1956 proxy war over Fairbanks Morse ends with a five year pact between Fairbanks Morse and Penn Texas. Leaders Leopold Silberstein and Robert Morse Jr sign. Morse remains head, Silberstein drops control bids, 11th director to be agreed, Silberstein to sell 300000 shares at 50 dollars each. Court approval pending.
Soviet President Klement Voroshilov begins a Southeast Asia goodwill tour in Indonesia with plans to visit Burma and other neutral nations. Peiping will monitor his travels closely as Maoist China guards influence over Asian leftist movements and neutralist sentiment. Tensions rise after Moscow’s Hungary actions strained East Asian ties.
Joseph D. Nunan Jr former head of the nation's tax collectors was ordered to surrender May 23 to begin serving a five year sentence for federal tax evasion.

N J Mosely testified in Los Angeles that asthma would make four hours in smoggy LA painful and embarrassing. He seeks a change of venue to Long Beach in a suit against an auto firm over a contract. Judge Walter Allen refused, saying it could set a precedent.
The Cedar Rapids Marion Council of Churches reports 134 participants from 39 churches in a local level Vacation Church School Institute. Attendee growth rose 24 from last year, with registrations from 16 Cedar Rapids and Marion churches and 23 from outside. Organizers plan to repeat the event next spring and hold a fall teacher workshop.
The Church of God in Cedar Rapids plans a 3 p.m. dedication and homecoming service at Ellis Park Church of God after remodeling and enlargement. A noon basket dinner precedes the service. Rev. In Madison the Republican majority in the state legislature voted against a bill that would have let Governor Vernon Thomson appoint a U.S. senator to fill the McCarthy vacancy. The secret ballot outcome ends speculation Thomson would gain special appointive powers now forbidden by law.
The U S Court of Appeals unanimously upholds former Communist informer Harvey Matusow on five perjury counts. Matusow, 28, was convicted last Sept 26 and sentenced to five years for claiming Roy Cohn pressured him to testify falsely at the 1952 trial of 13 second-string Communists. Bail set at 10 000. surrender within 15 days to begin service.
