Fertilizer spill from clogged line shocks Western Iowa
A Red Oak NEW Cooperative spill over March 9 11 released about 265000 gallons of liquid nitrogen fertilizer after a valve was left open on a blocked line. The plume flowed through a stormwater ditch into the East Nishna Botna River killing most aquatic life for about 60 miles and prompting regulators to seek enhanced penalties. The Iowa DNR cites potential charges in district court with stronger enforcement while noting existing fines cap at 10000 dollars.
