Julien Dubuque Monument Marks First Iowa Settler
Julien Dubuque arrived in northeast Iowa about 1788 and mined lead with Meskwaki allies. He died 1810 and was buried atop a bluff overlooking the Mississippi. A monument at the Mines of Spain Recreation Area near Dubuque was dedicated in 1897, protecting Dubuque Potosa and other graves, as the Mines of Spain area grew into a National Historic Landmark protected by the Iowa Conservation Commission.
