Parking Ideas Earn Backing Before Proposals Reach Council

Cedar Rapids downtown merchants push for swift adoption of two traffic ideas from Mel Meyer removal of monthly parking at the First street parkade and angled parking on Second street SE between First and Fourth avenues. Meyer says he did not draft the suggestions cited in a mayoral letter signed by Jerry Miller. Safety Commissioner Ed Colton notes Meyer may be waiting for public reaction after meeting with merchants.

Parking proposals spark council talk on Second street

Colton says the issue will be raised at Tuesday's informal meeting as plans to convert the area into a covered mall advance. Meyer disputes a reported quote and cautions no recommendations have been made. Traffic studies continue with options to free space in the parkade while diagonal parking faces significant constraints on the 54 foot wide street.
