He Hires Self Out as Guinea Pig
SEATTLE AP David Cargo a University of Washington senior in mathematics works as a computer operator and is a popular human guinea pig. Over two years he has taken pills smoked marijuana swallowed rubber tubing and undergone exams for about 500 dollars. He describes easy money and health oversight as fringe benefits. He recalls early studies including a locomotion maze and a sugar absorption test earning 5 and 30 dollars, and wearing nylon underwear like Apollo astronauts for 111 dollars to study blood flow. He now takes four colchicine pills daily in a trial for a male birth control method, with researchers promising free abortions if conception occurs. He has undergone other tests and refused only 100 dollars to remove tissue, saying he would not do it for 200.
