Upright chimney swift tower returns to life in Iowa preserve
The 6,500 pound Althea Sherman chimney swift tower was raised onto a new concrete foundation at the Bickett Rate Preserve along the Cedar River near Buchanan after 21 years. Barbara Boyle Johnson of Williamsburg and Dan Daly of Iowa City praised the effort to honor the early 1900s woman scientist. The tower, built in 1915 in National, originally aided study of swifts and will host a nest cam once swifts settle in.
