Colton issued a Friday statement apologizing to Cedar Rapids police for off-hand remarks about a shooting. He said there was no justification for the comments, that the officer acted properly, and he acknowledged officers face frustrations under laws seen as favoring violators.
Safety Commissioner Ed Colton proposed making police officers notaries public to accept on the spot affidavits from residents. The plan aims to improve public relations by allowing sworn statements at scenes, reducing the need to visit headquarters, with 20 officers initially to gain powers at about $12 each.
Joe Edward Jackson, 36, of 2405 McCarthy road SE, pled innocent to assault with intent to commit murder in a case tied to an April 30 shooting of Kathleen Joslin at the same residence. Judge Louis Schultz set June 21 at 9 a.m. for the trial. Joslin, shot in the neck, was treated at Cedar Rapids Mercy Hospital and listed in good condition Friday.
James Thurn of Edgewood was charged with drunk driving after losing control of his ten ton truck at the Highway 9 and 76 intersection. The vehicle overturned but Thurn escaped injury. The piece also notes a local garage sale promotion.
Alan Roy Speidel, 25, of 1023 Twenty sixth street SE, was charged Thursday with lascivious acts with a child. Cedar Rapids police arrested Speidel at 6 10 p m in connection with a May 4 report by a six year old child in the southeast quadrant of the city.
Three men were charged with drunk driving after Cedar Rapids police observed erratic driving. Dennis Ward, 30, of 1519 Fourth avenue SE, arrested at 11:04 p.m. at Third avenue and Tenth street SE. William Schminkey, 24, of 828 Fourth street NW, arrested at 1:30 a.m. Friday in the 1500 block of B street SW. Jacob Sagers, 42, Central City, arrested at 2:20 a.m. at Sixteenth avenue and Sixth street SW.
SAN FRANCISCO The board of supervisors accepted a proposal to end the 38 day city craft workers strike crippling transit. An 11 member committee of labor and city reps would study the dispute and avert further stoppage with an immediate return to work if both sides accept. Board President Quentin Kopp said the plan would permit an immediate return to work.
William E. Brown, 31, of 1553 E Avenue NE, was found guilty by a Linn County jury on April 6 of two counts of possession with intent to deliver heroin. Linn District Judge Robert Osmundson sentenced him Thursday to one year in Linn jail and a $1,000 fine after police seized heroin at his residence during a search with a warrant.
