The Labor Department reports an 0.8 percent April rise in wholesale prices led by a 4.2 percent surge in farm costs. Livestock eggs and green coffee drove farm gains, while processed foods rose 1.9 percent. Industrial prices edged up 0.3 percent as metal and wood prices shifted, with overall wholesale index at 181.3.
Iowa Senate voting 24 to 16 backed allowing a husband to be charged with raping his wife as part of a broad criminal code rewrite. Debate highlighted calls for equal protection, with senators arguing marriage should not shield abuse and noting other reforms including helmet repeal and drunken driving penalties.

A Buchanan county grand jury indicted Deputy Dwight Guenther and Winthrop Officer Phil Adreon on manslaughter charges for the April 16 shooting of 19 year old Donald Mayner. Ballistics linked the fatal shot to Adreon. both officers fired five rounds on the dirt road near Mayner’s home.
In Linn County Court Kandee Jacoby 25 faces murder charges after police say she shot Douglas Jacoby in bed then claimed death by own action. Prosecutors allege drinking prior to the Jan 3 incident at home and at Deano’s Tap with events leading to the shooting between 5 45 and 7 18 a.m. as officers arrived to find Jacoby in bed.
Amana Refrigeration will host about 150 overseas distributors from more than 100 countries for a six day international convention starting Sunday. The program includes tours of Amana colonies and plant, a private White House meeting with President Ford, and cultural side trips to Tennessee and Washington. Amana President George Foerstner and officials from Iowa and Tennessee will participate in speeches and dinners highlighting international commerce and the companys export success.
Des Moines Register and Tribune Co petitions the Iowa Supreme Court for a temporary injunction to quash a Linn County district court order barring the press from publishing juror identities in the Kandee Jacoby murder trial. The filing follows District Judge Robert Osmundson’s ban.
The Gazette agrees to comply with Judge Osmundson’s order not to publish juror names in the Jacoby trial. It questions constitutionality but says public good and juror safety justify the present compliance.
