Solon Newport merger plan faces county board vote

Johnson county board of education signaled a Thursday decision on the Solon Newport and Graham No. 2 districts merger after a Monday public hearing. Six petitions object to the plan include Newport residents seeking exclusion and Solon residents fearing extra students. If objections are overruled, a vote by the proposed district would follow.

Fourth District Legion Elects Officers at Spring Conference

The Fourth district spring conference in Manchester elected Clayton Schlick of Osage as commander. Other Legion officers include Don Rima Decorah and T. E. Sondrol Clear Lake as vice commanders, John B. Cross Charles City adjutant, John W. Moore Osage liaison committee. Auxiliary officers named are Mrs W P Oliver Oelwein president, Mrs Eugene Davis New Hampton, Mrs Loren Schecker Nora Springs, Mrs Don Martin vice-presidents, Mrs Roy Siverson Elkader treasurer, and Mrs Melvin Furness Joice secretary.

Clem Fang man suffered a broken hip in a fall at the Hubert Fangman home. He is hospitalized at Dubuque.

No Restrictions On Legislature Call, Erbe Says

Iowa Attorney General Norman Erbe ruled there is no legal restriction on Gov Loveless calling the legislature back into session without delay to address tax matters. He noted vacancies could delay a session, but none existed when the lawmakers adjourned. The 1947 special session was called by Gov Blue to cut income taxes.

Dubuque Man Killed in Early Morning Highway Crash

Eugene A. Schick, 24, of Dubuque was killed when his car missed a curve on highway 151, struck a utility pole, and rolled over several times about a quarter-mile west of Key West. Authorities say he may have fallen asleep. the crash happened around 1 a.m. and was found at daylight. Schick was married and worked at the Dubuque Packing Company.

Sheaffer Pen Reports Earnings Rise 7.5 Percent

W A Sheaffer Pen Co reports earnings up 7.5 percent for the year ended February 28. President W A Scheaffer II says net sales rose modestly to 26,284,942 while net income reached 2,208,355 or 2.67 a share, aided by operating economies and manufacturing improvements.

East Iowans Elected By Theta Sigma Phi

Julie Foster of Cedar Rapids, a University of Iowa junior, elected president of the SUI chapter of Theta Sigma Phi. Mary Ann Stark of Tama is vice president and Jane Hubly of Cedar Rapids is secretary as the group names officers for 1957 58. The officers will be installed at a May 14 ceremony.

Delaware School Council Elects Officers for County Council

The Delaware County Council for Better Schools elected officers this week representing 28 districts and four private schools. County chairman is Mrs. Paul Grimm of Oneida, with Helen Ryan as recording secretary, Miss Nellie McLaren as corresponding secretary treasurer, and an executive slate including John Witte Howard Paskash and multiple clergy and community members. The executive committee will meet soon and open public meetings are planned on alternate months starting next September.

Phone Pioneers Life Members Will Meet

Monticello hosts the Telephone Pioneers of America Cedar Rapids chapter life members for its annual meeting in the basement of the Methodist church. A 6:30 dinner opens the event with more than 50 members expected. M. H. Morrison of Cedar Rapids has led the club as president this year. Officers will be elected at the meeting.

Des Moines Student Dies After Car Hits Signal Island

Des Moines 24 year old James K. Qualley died at Iowa Lutheran hospital from injuries after his car struck a traffic signal island on April 28. He was a Drake University student and his death marked the seventh traffic fatality in Des Moines this year.

Cedar Officers Probe Burglary at Clarence
