Jet plunges 17 200 feet over Atlantic engine failure blamed
An Eastern Airlines L 1011 with 172 aboard plunged 17 200 feet after takeoff from Miami bound for the Bahamas as all engines failed due to missing O rings in oil seals. Pilot Dick Boddy restarted the tail engine and returned to Miami International Airport with no injuries. NTSB blamed missing rings for oil leakage and engine failure and investigated maintenance lapses.
