Iowa House OKs 272.3 Million for Welfare Programs
The Iowa House approved a 272.3 million dollar appropriation for welfare and social services, sending the bill to the Senate on a 95 to 1 vote. The package increases funding about 12.7 percent from last year and 4.9 million above Gov. Branstad’s recommendation, including 161.4 million for Aid to Dependent Children for 101,500 recipients. It also allows nursing home reimbursements to rise to 28.10 dollars per day for Title 19 patients if funds permit, and requires a plan by October to cut upper management by five percent.

Iowa House backs tougher suit rules against state and locals
The Iowa House approved a measure limiting government liability for faulty public works and enabling partial fault defenses. It would shield governments from certain negligent designs, ease city employee liability, and cap damages when blame is shared, applying to cases July 1983 to June 1984 as a study is set. The bill now goes to the Senate with the transportation measure.
