Cedar Rapids police and firefighters say they will press a pay raise and an eight hour day after the city council rejected both proposals. Captain Steve Stolba and Bernard Brown lead the committees pledging a comeback, noting budgets and comparisons with Iowa cities.
The exiled Greek government confirms major fleet losses to German forces in Crete. Seven destroyers and six submarines were saved, but ten destroyers sunk, two torpedo boats reached safety, all auxiliaries lost, and hospital ships sunk with crews. Submarines reportedly reached Al OE and joined British forces.
NBC and MBS announced they will stop broadcasting Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini speeches unless they are of primary historical importance. They stressed no collusion, but that one hour harangues are not worth radio time and could clash with paid commercials.
Weather reports indicate a heavy rain event ended at Camp Claiborne Louisiana with 7.93 inches of precipitation falling over 48 hours near Des Moines AP reports.

Work began Tuesday as winter damage caused bulging pavement. Final action on beer and dance ordinances is postponed to a later meeting. John A. elected cemetery trustee successor to J. E. Homans. Leonard Burrows accepted 215 for North Thirteenth street lot with $15 refund if a new home starts by December 31.
Marion relatives report the death of Charles R. Albaugh on Monday in a Los Angeles hospital after a long heart illness. He moved with his family to Glendale five years ago and was born April 24, 1878. He married Lulu Stafford in Marion on June 24, 1905 and is survived by his wife, children Redmond, Dan Albaugh, Mrs Melvin Sebrecht, Alden Albaugh, Margaret Albaugh, two brothers J. J. Albaugh and R. D. Albaugh, four grandsons and three granddaughters. Funeral services will be in California.
Mrs Verne Clemans and Mrs E A Starry hosted a miscellaneous shower at the Starry home Monday evening in honor of Mrs Paul Anderson formerly Dorothy Tilton before her April 23 marriage. Neighbors attended including Mrs Lyle Fehr and many other named guests. Mrs Frank Anderson of Mount Vernon also joined the gathering.
Mrs J J Keith chairman of the Junior Red Cross says eighth grade pupils prepared 100 Easter tray favors for the Veterans hospital in Des Moines under art instructor Miss Gwyneth Young. Second and third graders at Lincoln Emerson and Irving schools gathered buttons for sewing room use. St Berchmans boys contributed 1500 enamel material. Eight pie dresses are being made by pupils of the meat of the school under Harriet Beyer.
Marion high school senior Duane Nollsch will address the Lions Club dinner at 6 15 tonight. The Hawkeye Boys State will be his substitute program. Earl Welsher of Legion Marion will also attend as a guest.
Mrs A A Hardin, chairwoman of volunteer workers for the Red Cross, reports 568 garments finished in the month ending May 5. The tally includes eight dresses size 38, 83 infant dresses and kimonos, 22 dresses size 2 and 6 years, 12 dozen diapers, 29 blankets, 44 bonnets, 208 bootees, 7 cuddle toys, 6 mufflers, 16 sweaters and one shawl.

The Keystone division of the Methodist W S C S will meet Wednesday at 2:30 pm at 1298 Twelfth Street the home of Mrs J B Fosdick. Mrs Arthur Shore will chair the refreshment committee with assistance from Mrs Harley McCalley and Mrs W P Secrist.
Mr and Mrs W E Dennis enjoyed a surprise party at their home on 1290 Eighth Street Saturday night celebrating their twenty fifth anniversary. Miss Margery Mordorst and Mrs J Alvin Beiber directed arrangements. Refreshments were served to 26 relatives neighbors and friends. The couple received a purse of silver from the group.
Mr and Mrs N W Harry returned Monday from St Peters vane where they spent the rest of the week.
The Kathryn Blinks division of the Methodist W S C S will meet Thursday at 2 30 in the afternoon at the home of Mrs A E Blinks 1985 Eighth avenue.

Orville Fritzemeier of Alden visited Miss Lois Leidigh at her home, hosted by Dr. and Mrs. R. E. Leidigh as the host family.
Mrs. Myrtle Snyder was taken to the University hospital at Iowa City Monday for treatment. She had been ill at the Cedar Rapids home of her son in Cedar Rapids. Her condition is listed as serious.
Mrs O W McBride was elected president of Fidelis circle of Kings Daughters Friday at the meeting held at Mrs R B Watters home. Mrs Mr Fairhurst was made president.
McKinley high School held the semi annual Socratecian chapter induction in the auditorium. Dr. Charles T. Hickok of Coe college spoke on Two Milers and the factors of a trained mind obligation and imagination. Charles R. Youtzy died at about 2 30 a m Tuesday in a local hospital after a stroke Monday evening while attending a painters and decorators banquet at the Odd Fellows hall. He was born May 12 1895 in Allison Iowa and lived in Cedar Rapids 44 years. Surviving are his wife two sons Charlies R Youtzy Jr Cedar Rapids Edwin E Youtzy Jefferson Barracks Mo a grandson Donald Raymond Youtzy two sisters Mrs Pearl Hunter Cedar Rapids and Mrs Mary Winslow.
Charles Becicka Jr was found dead of a gunshot wound at his North Liberty home two miles northwest of Monday. D Cal lah an of Iowa City listed the death as suicide to his wife. He survived by an infant daughter Dolores Ann and his parents Mr and Mrs Charles. He had lived in the county all his life.
A brief church report notes a service at Way Chapel conducted by The Settaredie. Parishioners attended as the ceremony proceeded with customary prayers and a short sermon.
A double funeral is set for Sunday at the Rohn chapel at 8 a.m. with Rev. Merton B. Green officiating. The bodies will be moved to Bird, Iowa, for additional services at 2 p.m. at the Presbyterian church. Burial follows in the local cemetery. Burial of brother Robert Dale and sister Ruby Fern preceded them. Friends may visit at the chapel Tuesday evening.

Albert F Knight age 75 of 1079 Favenue NW died early Monday. Funeral services will be in Beatty chapel at 2 p.m. Wednesday conducted by Rev W O Eckler. Burial in Linwood cemetery. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
City briefs report a Home Builders class at the First Evangelical church to gather Friday for a pot luck supper and business. Prada Rebekah staff hold a Wednesday evening meeting in the Glow room of the Gas Company with Mrs. J. Kroulik and Miss Sadie Viach as hostesses.
Mrs. Mervin L. Myers of near Toddville was released from Mercy hospital to her parents home at 1321 Fourth street NW after giving birth to daughter Marjorie Belle.
Mrs Ruth Verteiko has left Mercy hospital after a major operation and six weeks of illness. She is convalescing at her home at 1217 K Street SW and is slowly recovering.
A party of 30 parents and pupils from Union School No. 1 in Fulham township toured Cedar Rapids on Tuesday with their teacher Mrs. Marlo Anderle. Tours were planned to showcase local sights and activities.

Petition by Shell Oil Co to remodel its current structure and add a new pump island at the northeast corner of A Avenue and Second Street NE was sent to the engineering department by the city council on Monday. The plan calls for multiple curb cuts and a new curb-cut layout due to the station’s size and location.
The Cedar Rapids district committee met at the Lafayette cafe Tuesday to plan a district camp site on Indian Creek and Thirty-second Street Drive. Committee chairman Rollo Pickford said the site would be developed for overnight camping by troops.
The group also laid plans for the annual summer camp at Waubeek, detailing schedule, activities, and resources to be organized for campers this season.
Henry Files formerly of Cedar Rapids now in Syracuse New York is recovering after an operation in Rochester Minnesota. The update comes in a letter to his brother Dr. Edward Files of Cedar Rapids.
Post Office announces no further international postal money orders payable in Greece. George Beattie, assistant postmaster, reports from Postmaster General Frank C Walker that money orders issued and held at the New York exchange office will be returned and funds refunded including fees.
Roy FE Choate, president and GM of LaPlante Choate Manufacturing, was elected vice-president and director of the Culver Fathers Association at Culver Military Academy during Fathers weekend. About 100 fathers from 17 states joined golf tennis baseball crew races and a garrison review. John Choate, son of Mr and Mrs Choate, attends Culver.
