Civil matters piled up at Cedar Rapids court as filing deadline neared. The day saw 45 actions entered with 32 divorce filings in the final five days, plus numerous law cases and personal injury actions against local defendants and firms.
Decorah prepares for Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Martha with a packed program from arrival at five to departure Sunday. Norwegian officials and Luther College figures attend ceremonies at Hotel Winneshiek and Preus Gym, including a doctor of civil law conferment for Olav, a souvenir, and a gift from the Norwegian museum.
The note suit seeks a total judgment of 562 dollars against Mrs. B. Wag gner now known as Mrs. B. E. Collicott. Otto L. Schluter sues Iowa Leather Co. and others for 2200 dollars in a legal services and expense action.
The Mason City High School and Junior College Teachers association endorsed Harold Templeman president Cedar Rapids Classroom Teachers association. Funeral services are set for Vance G. Carlton, 24, who died from injuries in an auto crash. Carlton, a truck driver for Horrabin Contracting, leaves a wife and 21-month-old daughter, Patricia Lee, plus parents, a brother, and several relatives. Also scheduled, Don E. Neiman will address a Chamber of Commerce luncheon May 22 at the Hotel Jefferson. Bill Duree, 18, declined injuries after a crash on highway 218. damage about 400 dollars. Orlando Trabbic of Toledo, Ohio, was arrested on a robbery warrant at his Iowa City residence. Abraham Schneider of Wisconsin won 100 dollars in the Northern Oratorical League contest. Arthur Klein of Michigan took 50 dollars. William Rivkin of Davenport represented Iowa.
Joseph Edward Burkart 59 died Saturday at his home 895 Twenty-fifth street Cedar Rapids and Marion areas. Born Oct 18 1879 in Akron Ohio he moved to Iowa at age 12 and leaves wife Lucille Williams a son Franklin and brother Albert. Funeral Tuesday at 2 p.m. Balster and Hall Home for Funerals with burial in Linwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Fred Lang hosted a Friday tea for the Women’s Missionary society of the Christian church with Grace H. Starr and Companions Missionary groups as guests. Devotions were by Mrs. Rosa Reiter. program led by Mrs. C A Dykes and Mrs. Roy Mack. Edna Roberts played piano. Fay Marsh sang. Tea centered on lavender gloxinias and yellow tapers with Mrs. J L Roberts presiding.
Mrs. Arthur Newman was elected president of the Reading circle at a Friday meeting at Mrs. Robert Cessford. Mrs. Irvin L. Ford was named vice president, Mrs. Leon R. Blinks secretary, and Mrs. George A. Kindler treasurer. The group plans a closing meeting at Mrs. Mary English home on June 12 with speaker Miss Ruth Goodwine of Cedar Rapids.
Mrs. N J Gorman Mrs A E Fairhurst and Mrs Lloyd Stark attended the Midwestern district meeting in Chicago. Stark as alternate delegate will report at the May Marion club breakfast Thursday at the Marion golf club.
The Women's Progressive club held a luncheon Thursday at the Commonwealth tea room in Cedar Rapids. Seventeen covers were set at one long table with a central spring flower bowl. Arrangements were led by Mrs. R. T. Sloan, Mrs. George Gillmore, and Mrs. Verle Etzel.

The Play-Mor 500 club met Friday at 2330 Eighth Avenue East hosted by Mrs. Harold Usher. Prizes went to Mrs. Arthur Butterfield Mrs. Bill Stilions and Mrs. Elvice Milburn. The season ends with a closing meeting at Mrs. Gertrude Myers home in Cedar Rapids.

Edward Machula 26 was found hanging in the hoghouse on his family farm near Cedar Rapids along U S highway 30. Deputy coroner Dr. R E Munden ruled death by own action, no inquest. He worked as a beef dresser at Wilson Packing Company and recently injured his foot, with despondency noted. He was born December 21, 1912, and survived by parents, a brother Milo, and grandmother Anna Machula. Funeral Monday at 2 p.m. in Brush chapel, burial in Campbell Cemetery.
A spectacular blaze at the Logansport distillery of the Pennsylvania Distilling company in Ford City Pennsylvania destroys 10000 barrels of bonded whisky. Loss estimated between 500000 and 1000000 dollars. The fire, visible over ten square miles, sweeps a three story warehouse Friday night.
Calmar high school will stage a three act comedy The Mummy and the Mumps in the auditorium on May 23. Lead roles go to Mary Jo Doubek and Florian Humker with a large cast including Georgina Korbel Marie Hosting Imogene Hauber Catherine Breihier Dolores Rothmeyer Paul Pavlovec Harold Frisbie and others under director Miss Margaret Merritt.
In Waterville Iowa a fire razed the H. J. Dumben furniture factory and an adjacent ice house. Fire units from Waukon Mc Gregor and Monona saved two gasoline tanks and a tank car from the blaze. Loss for the plant was about 8000 dollars with 1000 dollars insurance. Two Milwaukee stock cars burned and nearby home roofs caught fire from sparks but were quickly quenched. The plant employed about a dozen people.
A special charter train chartered by Guttenberg Commercial Club will run Sunday to Decorah for the visit of Crown Prince Olav and Princess Martha of Norway. It will stop at McGregor Marquette Monona and Postville to pick up passengers and arrive in Decorah at 11 am with return departure at 5 pm.
The Iowa City city council voted unanimously to reject a plan to adopt daylight saving time for the summer months. Two tavern owners testified against the measure arguing it would unfairly affect their businesses since nearby towns would stay open later.

Dr T F Suchomel leaves for Des Moines for the Iowa State Medical Society meeting and will give the welcome address to visiting physicians.
William Smith of Cedar Rapids purchased the Pullman hotel from R. C. Mann who moved from Eldora about two years ago. Mrs. Margaret Hoskins and the Misses Georgia Bures Henrietta Bures Ethelyn Emerson Annie Smith Isabelle Montillon Minnie Beenk were named enumerators for the coming school census. A lightning strike during today’s storm damaged the E W Richardson home at 1569 First Avenue, with a roof hole and slight shock to Mrs. Richardson and her two children. Parish house work began for St John Episcopal Church at Nineteenth Street and Park Avenue with Max Mildenstein awarded the bid of 15000 dollars, excluding plumbing and furnishings.

Mason City led the eastern division of the Iowa high school music festival as results from morning contests showed 12 first place ratings in division one and 12 in division two. Iowa City, Nevada, Traer, Charles City and Davenport trailed in pursuit of runnerup honors with numerous medals across solos and ensembles from schools including Decorah, Cedar Rapids Roosevelt, Vinton, Waukon, West Union and Oelwein among others.
