The State Department and NASA reviewed Khrushchev claims and said a single engine U 2 weather plane with a civilian pilot disappeared after takeoff from Adana Turkey. The pilot reported oxygen trouble and may have passed out, allowing auto pilot to drift into Soviet air space. NASA described the craft as a high altitude research aircraft studying turbulence and jet stream effects. Ambassador Thompson was to seek full information from the Soviet government. The incident sparked varied political reactions as Eisenhower moved planned summit attendance and civil defense drills continued.
