A Santa Fe rancher Walter Mayer, 56, is being returned to Iowa to face a murder charge in the fatal shooting of John C. Wisdom, 51, near Bloomfield. Mayer waived extradition and will await a bail hearing Wednesday in Ottumwa. prosecutors oppose bond. Mayer says the shooting was in self defense after an argument over money.
The Iowa State Dental Society reaffirmed its endorsement of fluoridation of community water supplies as safe and beneficial. The group urged all Iowa communities to adopt fluoridation. Perry J. Contell urged improved dental health education and Sugar reduction to prevent decay as a key message to the public. Dr H W Stonebrook and J E Berney were to assume top society roles in the officer election.
About 550 Perry residents filed objections with the Dallas County Board of Assessment and Review over a roughly 10 percent property value increase tied to the four year revaluation schedule. A public hearing was scheduled for May 21 in Perry.

A jury was chosen in the case by Joseph Z. Drakos against Vincent Short over an March 30 highway 30 crash near Mt. Vernon. Drakos alleges being thrown under the car and injured when Short rear ended the stalled vehicle around 12:25 a.m. The panel includes George E. Madison and other residents.
A district court jury found for Jesse C. Wormer in a $40,000 breach of promise suit filed by Ethel Ramer. Deliberations began at 4 40 p m, they returned a sealed verdict at 7 30 p m after dinner, read next morning by Judge Penningroth.
Harold Truman Greene, 35, of 1429 L Street SW, pled guilty to drunk driving Tuesday. He was fined 300 dollars and costs in district court after being arrested about 1 a.m. by Officer Harry Acker for driving without lights and crossing the center line on Sixth Street SW near Seventeenth Avenue.
Howard Ellsworth Pyle, 24, of 152 Seventeenth Avenue SW, pled innocent to operating a motor vehicle without the owner's consent. Police identified the car as belonging to Albert Haynes of 524 Twelfth Street SE. Pyle, who had been staying with Haynes, allegedly took the keys from Haynes while he slept. detectives Shannon and Matias arrested him Monday afternoon.
Ivar B. Lord of Mechanicsville sued Denis Nerowlis of Bettendorf for 961.79 dollars over a February 28 auto collision on Highway 30 about one quarter mile east of Lisbon.
The Mead Farm Equipment Company filed a suit Tuesday against A. G. Thurman doing business as the Federal Hybrid Seed Corn Company for 300 dollars claimed due on an account.

Caroline Melvedt 92, of 1017 Twenty-sixth Street SE, Cedar Rapids, died at home at 2 10 a.m. Tuesday. Born April 23, 1861 in Green County Wisconsin, she moved with her family to Le Grand at six weeks. Survived by daughter R Anna Melvedt and three sons Gordon Kendrick M and Edward F, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Services held at First Friends church Marshalltown at 1 30 p.m. Thursday with burial in Stavanger Cemetery Le Grand. Friends may call Beatty Beurle chapel 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Amelia Hodge 58 years a Cedar Rapids resident since 1928 died at home after a six month illness. Survived by two sons Ralph Hodge Jr and Lester, a daughter Mrs Walter Pepmeyer, a brother George Harder, two sisters Mrs Rose Pikes and Mrs Dora Andrews, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Louise Duquette received a Defense Department telegram saying her husband, First Lt. Norman E. Duquette, is prisoner of war in North Korea and China. The message offered no health or welfare details, and she last heard he was missing in action since January 26, 1952 after completing 85 missions as a jet photo reconnaissance pilot.
