Partly cloudy with possible showers in southeast Iowa. Monday night lows 35 to 40 north and 45 south. Tuesday highs in the 60s. Five-day outlook shows a warm wrap by Wednesday. Then a list of births across multiple towns with dates May 2 and 3, plus a long notice of a divorce petition and various legal and service notices across Waukon, Coralville, Marquette, and other communities.
AFL Grain Millers Local 100 spokesmen renewed their protest against a city site clearing order for nine houses on H Street SW between Seventh and Eighth Avenues. The council aims to clear land for a future street department barn, with 18 families affected and union leaders calling the move insulting and demanding retracting remarks. Council members defended the plan as needed for storage and future expansion, with potential bond issues discussed but not required. The dispute centers on race and housing concerns, while officials insist housing may be replaced and that urgency stems from equipment needs.
Clyde Titcomb, 54, died from injuries after an accident on his Tama County farm when his clothing was caught in a belt and propelled him into machinery. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Sheridan Methodist Church. Burial is at Malcolm Cemetery. Survivors include his wife and four children. Mason Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Special to The Gazette. Burglars struck Benton County early Sunday stealing 170 cartons of cigarets, beer, and $25 in cash. Dickens tavern at Newhall was hit about 2 30 am. Sheriff Ed Thompson said eight to ten six packs of beer 125 cartons of cigarets and $20 were taken. A 200 pound safe containing $200 was moved to the alley but left unopened. Entry gained through a rear window. The other breakin was at the
Burglars broke a window to enter Merle Sanders’ Shellsburg station and stole 45 car tons of cigarettes a box of cigars candy and about 5 or 6 dollars. Sheriff Thompson continued the investigation Monday noon.
John B. Frasher, 58, collapsed at the Ellis Ayark golf course Monday morning while starting a round. He was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Luke's hospital from a heart ailment per coroner Robert Brosh. Survived by widow, son George in the Army, and sister Alice Stump. Funeral announcements later.
Lola Marie Bowker wife of Tom Bowker died in a Cedar Rapids hospital at 6 10 p m Sunday after a long illness Born Oct 19 1896 in Cedar Bluffs she wed April 19 1916 in Cedar Rapids Surviving are her husband a daughter Betty Jane Wagner and a son James William Bowker both of Cedar Rapids two brothers Floyd Mosburg of Cedar Rapids and Paul Brown of Clinton five grandchildren She was a member of Central Park Presbyterian church Services will be at Turner chapel 3 30 p m Tuesday conducted by Dr Andrew E Kurth Burial will be Cedar Memorial Friends may call at the chapel before services.
Floyd Plank 28 and owner with his brother Roy of a Tulsa restaurant were en route to Cedar Rapids when their car collided on U S 66 near Afton Oklahoma. Floyd died at the scene Roy was hospitalized in serious condition. Survived by father five sisters and two brothers. Body to Janeba funeral home Cedar Rapids. Funeral announced later.
Services for Howard L. Scott who died from injuries in a car track collision near Stanwood will be at Beatty-Bearle chapel at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Rev. Floyd Hinshaw of St. James Methodist church will preside. Burial is in Linwood cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
Knute Kolsto, retired farmer of Atkins, died at Turner chapel at 1 30 p m Tuesday. The Rev H G Schwegler pastor of the First Lutheran church will conduct services Burial will be in the Norway cemetery Friends and relatives are invited to attend observers of the service were told by the family
Charles Albert Dodds of Tipton died at the Ralston nursing home on his ninety second birthday after a long illness. Born May 3 1861 in Cedar Bluffs he married Susan Pfaff in 1892 who died in 1941 he remarried in 1943. Surviving are his wife and two brothers W O Dodds of Edina Missouri and L J Benda of Iowa City. Funeral Tuesday at 2 30 p m at Peter Seim funeral home with burial in Masonic cemetery.
President Eisenhower held a Monday meeting with Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Gordon Dean and three other AEC members to discuss nuclear policy and security.
A Polk county district court may hear a declaratory judgment case seeking to define the authority of Iowa's Interim Budget and Financial Control Committee. A State Executive Council member argues the panel's funds and duties encroach on the council's administrative powers and could require court clarification. The dispute centers on automatic pay raises for state workers and whether additional funds for the committee are an emergency need between sessions.
Public Improvements Commissioner W. W. Stolba issued a blunt warning after Clean-up week, reporting 80 percent of downtown businesses swept debris into the street. Street cleaners started at 2 am to redo the loop, with Stolba and Safety Commissioner E. A. Prochaska warning several sweepers. If merchants do not cooperate, the city may stop sweeping.
Unemployment benefits were paid to 270 northeastern Iowa railroad men by end of April per the Cedar Rapids Railroad Retirement board report. Among them 123 were Great Western workers at Oelwein, with 10 clerks, 26 brakemen, 60 machinists and helpers, and 23 laborers idle after a prior strike. Total Cedar Rapids unemployed split 76 operating and 194 non operating. Average benefit about 100 dollars monthly per worker. In March 33 claims were filed for survivor or pension benefits under the railroad retirement act.
Attorneys for Iowa Electric and named officers moved Monday to dismiss a suit filed April 7 seeking to halt a proposed merger with the Iowa Electric Light and Power Co. The motion argues the plaintiff Karl Kaufman fails to state a claim and that the action benefits no one else.
Final arguments continued in a $40,000 breach of promise case from Center Point as jurors neared possible deliberation. Ethel Ramer sues Jesse C. See. attorneys spent the morning on closing remarks with proceedings to resume after lunch.
Willis L. Kray of Anamosa pled guilty to drunk driving and was fined $300 and costs by Judge Floyd Philbrick. He was arrested after his car overturned in a ditch on Blair's Ferry road early Sunday. Marion Patrolman Gearhart Clemenson arrived first. Kray was taken into custody by Highway Patrolmen Harry Cloud and Harold DeGear.
The A. W. Peterson Company on Monday dismissed an account suit brought against R. C. Heefner, ending the legal action.
Fredrick Meyer has been installed as acting post master in Stanwood succeeding Cleve J. Long who retired at month end. The transfer was made April 30 by Postal Inspector Mark Snodgrass of Cedar Rapids.
In an Iowa Jaycees convention battle Fort Dodge wins by 123 to Sioux City after party switches and appeals. Des Moines takes the final ballot 112 to 109 amid a record 442 men and 48 women registered, with about 625 attendees including individual event tickets.
The Iowa Jaycees push a program to educate Iowans on legislative reapportionment and methods to carry it out. An amendment allows local groups to review and approve the proposal before it takes effect. Cedar Rapids Jaycees had announced a separate plan to honor Iowans by the Communists, potentially a scholarship.
Ewoldt testified at an ICC hearing in Chicago on Railway Express rate proposals. He warned a 25 percent rise in quantity rates and a $1.05 increase on straight express rates could slash Cedar Rapids freight volume by 50 percent and force local department stores to limit use of Express services. He urged keeping volume at current levels to preserve traffic into Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
