Police report a nine car crash in the 1300 block of First Avenue East at 12 18 p m injuring three people. William Gorman 63 of 2505 First Ave SE was speeding west when he tried to pass a car in the left turn lane causing a chain reaction crash. Gorman was admitted to Mercy Hospital in fair condition. Others were treated and released at Mercy and St Luke's hospitals.
Solidarity leader Lech Walesa urged strikers to pursue broad reform beyond wage hikes. At the Lenin Shipyard in Gdansk he warned of a bloody revolution if reforms fail and criticized the government for crippling Poland. About 7,000 workers halted shipyard output while 17,000 at Nowa Huta’s Lenin Steelworks continued a lengthy stoppage.
President Reagan said he never bases policy on astrological forecasts though Nancy Reagan reportedly checks sun and moon positions to schedule events. The White House dismissed claims of influence by astrologers and referenced a forthcoming book by former chief of staff Regan.
A Senate subcommittee report concludes Edwin Meese and his deputy violated a White House ban on intervening in government contracting for friends during 1981 and 1982 to aid Wedtech. The document cites warnings and criticizes Meese for personal ties with E. Robert Wallach, urging ongoing scrutiny as Meese faces possible resignation.
More than 1.1 million small channel catfish died in Iowa state rearing ponds last week. The loss disrupts county lake cage-rearing programs and a statewide stocking plan, affecting planned releases in June and in rivers and state lakes. University hatchery manager Mike Mason called the event baffling.
