Korean meat extenders eyed during two week U S visit

Korean processor Myaurysan Shin surveyed 11 of the 10 largest textured vegetable protein plants in the United States during a Hudson visit. He noted taste hurdles for meat substitutes in Korea where meat demand outstrips supply amid strong growth and rising per capita income. Shin, president of Dong Bang Oil Co., prefers U S soybeans over Brazil for shipping speed and lower oil content as Korea considers future imports and production strategies.

Korea Eyes Soybean Self sufficiency By 1980

Farm News reports that Shin, aided by the American Soybean Association, will import about 60 000 metric tons of soybeans to Korea this year. Korean farmers grow 419 000 metric tons mainly on marginal land to supplement rice crops. A USA soybean fact sheet cites foreign exchange constraints as the major hurdle to rising imports. Discovery of petroleum in Korea could boost foreign exchange and allow more U S soybeans. Government aims for self sufficiency in soybeans by 1980, but processors say demand will exceed production for some time.

Farm price rise boosts meat costs in grocery stores

The Agriculture Department said a 2 percent April rise in the farm price index reflects higher beef and hog prices. Livestock prices were about 18 percent above a year earlier, with beef retail around 1.37 to 1.39 per pound for April, after peaking at 1.61 last July.
