Hog farms linked to higher multi drug resistant staph infections
A U S study of 1 300 Iowa residents finds hog farm workers six times more likely to carry antibiotic resistant Staphylococcus aureus than non exposed individuals. Twenty percent carried multi drug resistant staph and thirty four percent carried tetracycline resistant strains versus three and four percent in unexposed groups. Midwest economy set for slower growth says survey
A regional survey of purchasing managers in Iowa and eight Midwestern states shows growth continuing but slowing over the next three to six months. The Mid-America Business Conditions Index rose to 52.7, signaling expansion though tempered by energy and agriculture pullbacks. Iowa’s index climbed to 53.3, while job growth remains flat to slightly negative. Exports and agricultural equipment demand are expected to weaken in 2015 due to the stronger dollar.
