The Chamber of Commerce of the United States adopted a 26 point campaign year program urging immediate pay as you go measures to strengthen national defense and reaffirm keep out of war. It calls for tax and labor policy changes, debt limits, and subversive activity curbs.
Acting on requests from Wes Benesh and Gordon Hughes the Cedar Raunds city council ordered the legal department to draft an ordinance prohibiting jay walking in all business districts. Benesh cited four pedestrian deaths this year and Hughes noted pedestrians constitute 39 percent of national traffic fatalities with 25 percent of those being jay walkers. Second Street between Second and Third Avenues and the Second Street Second Avenue intersection were marked as high offense sites.
Cedar Rapids police filed leaving the scene charges against an auto transport truck driver after a 4 30 am sideswipe on highway 30 near Cedar Rapids. H M Paul of Des Moines reported following the truck four miles to obtain the license number. The driver allegedly cut in and tore the front fender, prompting a state wide pickup order. The driver was expected to return from Michigan with a load of cars.
Crawfordsville Ind Thomas Allen Boys 28 year old Attica golf course greenskeeper was convicted of first degree murder in the sex slaying of year old Elizabeth De Bruicker and faces life imprisonment as set by the jury.
Justice Stanley Reed refused a stay for Walter H Rhodes, 32, condemned for the dynamite gun killing of his wife Mabel in Iowa City. The denial was without prejudice allowing Rhodes to seek a stay from another justice as his counsel pursues an appeal and a review of the conviction claiming coercion and a duress confession.
House sponsors of amendments to the Hatch clean politics act press for a floor debate after the judiciary committee shelved them. Rep. John J Dempsey plans a rules committee move to discharge the bill and a petition for 218 signatures to force action. The judiciary panel voted 14 to 10 to table provisions extending the act to state employees funded by federal money.
In Washington five railroad brotherhoods urged Congress to recommit to a conference on the Wheeler Lea transportation bill. House action was delayed until next Thursday by agreement between Democratic Leader Sam Rayburn and Republican Leader Joseph Martin.
Atlantic City N J The first general conference adopted 393 234 a resolution urging President Roosevelt to recall Myron C Taylor the personal representative at the Vatican The measure calls Taylor appointment unsettling and says the church will resist any church state union and any diplomatic ties between Vatican and United States It affirms strict church state separation and Bill of Rights protection though some delegates oppose the move as stirring religious hatreds.
Clearing skies moved in behind a belated winter blast and pushed a low pressure area toward Canada. Light snow lingered in the Great Lakes while rain fell on coasts. temperatures dipped from the Great Lakes to northern Louisiana and central Texas, with most regions seeing rising mercury except southern Illinois where fruit trees were damaged.
Police bulletin reports two crashes with no injuries and one arrest. George A. Krug, 21, of Fairfax, pled guilty to speeding after a 7:45 p.m. collision at Fourth Avenue and Second Street SW, fined $10 plus costs. His car hit a machine owned by Francis N. Pameticky, 27, of 1027 Second Street SE, tipping it on its side.
Fair skies warmed Cedar Rapids after a windy night as temperatures rose from 36 at 6 a.m. Thursday to 49 by 10 a.m. Strong winds kept the day brisk with 62 recorded at 2:45 p.m. The Chambers Inskeep recorder tracked a line moving from 37 at 3 p.m. Wednesday to 38 at midnight.

Thomas Doyle, 45, of 126 Nineteenth Street NW, suffered a skull fracture in a fall from a railing at the Memorial Coliseum around 10 30 p m Wednesday after leaving a baseball benefit stag party. He walked into a stone bannister eight feet to the sidewalk, was drunk per police, and taken to Mercy Hospital where Thursday his condition was listed as fair.
Paris reports artillery fire in the Vosges and Saar sectors of the western front broke a general calm on Thursday, according to a military informant.
Berlin reports that German forces entered Andalsnes after a 23 day campaign in central Norway driving British and French troops from a rail line between Dombas and Ulshberg toward the coast. Norwegian forces and defenses near Romsdal and Moeren reportedly capitulated amid continued fighting and flanking operations in the region.
Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain told the House of Commons that Allied forces withdrew from Andalsnes Norway with no loss. He said two German capital ships were damaged and Allied fleet was moved to the eastern Mediterranean. He warned of a long northern conflict and possible German moves on Britain or the Balkans.
In London Prime Minister Chamberlain abandons the idea of taking Trondheim from the south. Britain and France keep battle fleets in the eastern Mediterranean. Heavy damage is reported on German bases in Norway and Denmark from air raids. Berlin says the British withdraw from Andalsnes as German forces claim new successes from Oslo to Trondheim. Stockholm reports British warships striking a German transport lane in Kattegat and a German withdrawal from Roros.
