Iowa forecast parts cloudy with scattered showers and storms through Wednesday. Temperatures to rise to 75 to 80 by Wednesday with southerly winds 20 to 25 mph. Five day outlook shows mild conditions 6 to 9 degrees above normal and one inch plus rainfall. Also daily notes from Municipal airport and obituaries and court notices appear throughout the region.
Bicycle registration at the schools will begin next Monday with a 50 cent fee and 15 cents extra for transfers. Registrations are not at the police station while officers visit campuses. The schedule lists various dates and times at Harrison, Taylor, Trinity Lutheran, Fillmore, Hayes, Shaffer, Lincoln, Cleveland, St Ludmila, Van Buren, St Matthews, Jackson, St Wenceslaus, Buchanan, All Saints, Garfield, Tyler, Kenwood, Immaculate Conception, Arthur, Johnson, Polk, and other sites through May 18.
Warren T. Thompson, a University of Iowa senior, fell from the Memorial Union foot bridge into the Iowa River Sunday night and was rescued by Hawkeye quarterback Burt Britzman. He was taken to University Hospitals for treatment after suffering shock and mild injuries.
Twenty five American Sabrejets fought a larger Soviet built force over northwest Korea in the first air clash in five days. Four MiG-15s were damaged, one probably destroyed, others fled toward Manchuria. Akro Lt. Col. Bruce H. Hinton of Stockton California damaged two MiGs.
Floodwaters crested Monday morning at Independence and moved toward Waubeek and Anamosa with rises of about three inches per hour. By Tuesday morning Waubeek gauge neared the 1947 peak, while roads in Stone City and the Bluffs area faced inundation. Volga and Fayette reported park damage and submerged ground floors, with sandbagging begun around utilities and dikes protecting other communities.
Iowa officials kept Muscatine in a flood warning as levees weakened by rain and river pounding held danger. About 800 residents in South Muscatine were ordered out, many resistant to leaving. The Mississippi crest near 20.6 feet was not expected to fall for days, while a new guard unit from Iowa City was mobilized to assist sandbagging, headquartered in Wapello after a levee break north of Oakville was repaired.
Gov. Beardsley announced that Iowa will begin negotiations with Sen. Hickenlooper to accept Fort Des Moines under a federal transfer law. The State Executive Council had previously stated it would not accept the fort while the federal government might redeem it for defense needs. The council also does not want to disrupt housing for about 900 families in the Fort Des Moines veterans emergency housing area.
A hymn festival sponsored by the Council of Churches of Cedar Rapids and Marion will be held Sunday at 8 p.m. in St Pauls Methodist church Cedar Rapids. Dr Earl E Harper directs singing and explains hymn backgrounds. Invitations are issued to all church choirs in dress vestments for a processional.
Dr Henry Price Howells 50 longtime Cedar Rapids resident and chief chemist for Quaker Oats died in a Cedar Rapids hospital at 2 03 p m Monday after a sudden illness. Born June 27 1900 in Ottumwa he earned degrees from Iowa and Columbia and taught at Oregon State Oklahoma A and M. Surviving wife Norine two daughters Laurine and Willa Deane and son Richard D. also his mother sister and brother. Funeral services are planned in Cedar Rapids with graveside rites in Ottumwa.
Charles E. Petska 61 of 526 Fifth Street SE died at 1 a.m. Monday from a heart attack. Born February 27 1890 in Cedar Rapids he lived here all his life. Surviving are a sister Mrs Louis Visha Cedar Rapids three brothers Lou M Dickenson N D Fred Mt. Vernon Joseph Cedar Rapids a niece and two nephews. He belonged to Carpenter 308. Turner chapel at 3 30 p.m. Wednesday with Rector D A Lofer ski. Burial in Linwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
Graveside services for Thomas Albert Pettit 86 father of Mrs Claude Krebs will be held at Logan Park cemetery Sioux City at 10 a m Wednesday. The body was moved from Turner chapel to Sioux City Tuesday afternoon.
Robert Mundt 75 longtime Cedar Rapids resident died at a nursing home at 4 p.m. Monday after a long illness born November 28 1875 near Davenport He established Cedar Rapids first Cadillac agency now at the Union Bus and Interurban station Survived only by several nieces
Sandra Kay Sackett eight month old daughter of Mr and Mrs James Donald Sackett 2920 Madison Street NE Cedar Rapids died at 3 30 pm Monday in a Cedar Rapids hospital. She was born September 8 1950 in Cedar Rapids and is survived by her parents a sister Barbara Elaine at home and paternal and maternal grandparents all of Hopkinton. Turner Chapel will conduct funeral services at 11 am Wednesday with Dr Andrew E Kurth Westminster Presbyterian Church. Burial will be Cedar Memorial Cemetery with friends welcome at the chapel.
Mrs. Henry Goodrow of 3626 Center Point Road NE learns of the death of her brother George Nusz Bushnell in Inglewood California. Born Cedar Rapids 73 years ago he lived here most of his life. Survived by wife a son Eben an adopted daughter Rhea Brown both of Inglewood four sisters and two brothers. Burial will be Ingleside.
In a 1949 state department white paper Wedemeyer warned of a dangerous Korea scenario after Soviet withdrawal. He cited large scale Communist riots south of the 38th parallel and a Kremlin aim to control South Korea using Communist Korean forces. He urged permanent military neutralization through occupation until a buffer state forms.
An eastbound evening airmail flight from Cedar Rapids will be restored Wednesday. Assistant Postmaster Walter C Anawalt announced that United Air Lines will resume its briefly suspended flight at 9 10 p.m. Air mail letters received by 8 20 p.m. will be in time for the outgoing plane. Officials had expected the suspension to last about a month.
Cedar Rapids ranked second in traffic safety in 1950 among Iowa cities over 50 000. The Iowa Department of Public Safety announced the honor on Tuesday. Polson presented the second place award to the police department officials, with Sioux City first in group 1 and Des Moines honorable mention. Other group members include Waterloo and Davenport.
A Linn county jury deliberated under half an hour Tuesday and found Wilford Murphy 24 of 717 Fourth avenue SE guilty of stealing a car owned by George Alberts. Judge Floyd Philbrick sentenced Murphy to a term not to exceed 10 years at the men's penitentiary in Fort Madison. Defense argued intoxication negated responsibility while the state contended Murphy drank but was not intoxicated. Attorneys listed include Willis A. Glasgow, Richard F. Nazette, and W. G. Dimprich. Jurors named were Helen Phile, Mary Louise Barnhizer, Richard E. Berzinski, Helen R. Kunzman, George H. Benner, Louis E. Hermann, Mary Jane Rickey, Arthur B. Rudin, Don A. Edwards, Raymond E. Booze, Florence V. Vanicek, Mildred Sutera.
S M Wiley of Center Point was elected chairman of the 1951 Linn County board of review at an organizational meeting in the county assessor’s office. Other members include Charles Hedges Mt Vernon Ben Holets Fairfax George Price Alburnett and J C Lassen Marion. Hedges was absent. The board will meet through May to review assessments of personal property new buildings and improvements. County Assessor M G Linkletter reported 1951 valuations are complete outside Cedar Rapids except Buffalo township where illness of Ed Kula slows work.
Irven S. Wihlfehrt, 32, of 500 First Avenue NE, pleaded guilty to a drunk driving charge and was fined 300 dollars plus costs by Judge Floyd Philbrick. He may pay 50 dollars down and 100 dollars monthly. Arrested by Cedar Rapids police after his car struck a parked vehicle at Sixth Avenue and Seventh Street SE, owned by John Miller of 616 Seventh Street SE.
Four appeals from the Cedar Rapids superior court were dismissed after Port Stickle pled guilty and paid fines on four counts. Convictions dated June 19, 1950, included maintaining a junk yard failing to furnish garbage vessels depositing manure properly and lacking a building permit. Judge Floyd Philbrick ordered the dismissals on a motion by the city.
Two damage suits were filed Tuesday. Paul R Palmer sues Central Park Fuel Co for 391.72 for damage to his car in a collision January 28 at Bover Avenue and Fifteenth Street SE. Robert Kelp sues Arthur B Smith for 685.39 for damage to his car in a collision December 30 at L Avenue and Fifth Street.
Two suits were dismissed on Monday. Roy Squires dropped his divorce action against Lillian Squires. A foreclosure suit by Nora Barron against Benton J. and Ethel Gracey was dismissed after the parties settled out of court.
The April term was continued at the defendants request. William V. Prenosil faces drunk driving charges while Melvin J. Haeger and L. R. Riley are charged with assault with intent to inflict great bodily harm. All three are free on bond.
Mercy hospital filed three of five suits Tuesday seeking damages. The hospital claims Edwin D. and Darlene Dvorak owe 124.95 dollars, Richard and Marjorie Jensen owe 240.15 dollars, and a third party owes 133.57 dollars.
Rudolph and Mary Betty Rodriguez are named in a suit alongside Joseph J. Nemec versus Robert and Dorothy Gatewood for 227 dollars and 12 cents. The Killian Company vs Clinton and Dolores Prior seeks 367 dollars and 17 cents. A vagrancy charge against Albert H. Webb filed April 12 was carried forward on Monday at state motion.
