Jerome Nixon a 13-year-old Boy Scout leapt from the Second avenue bridge, swam about forty feet to reach Mrs Grace Shaw, 33, of 630 Nineteenth Avenue SW, who was in the Cedar River’s west channel. He turned her over, towed her to shore, and bystander help carried them to the police station. Mrs Shaw, wife of Eugene Shaw, was revived and then taken home. She recently suffered injuries in a separate Jan. 9 crash in First Avenue East near Eighth Street.

ANCONA Italy reports say a violent Adriatic storm Saturday destroyed numerous fishing boats and drowned sixteen fishermen. Wind velocity reached fifty miles per hour as rescue and recovery efforts began.
Anthony Czarnecki, collector of customs for the Chicago district, announced his resignation effective April 1. He is expected to be succeeded by Frank H. Jewell, assistant collector.
Washington UPI reports the Interstate Commerce Commission approved an $85 million yearly freight rate increase, restoring workers' pay to pre-low mood levels. The 10 percent-wide proposal was scaled back, exempting farm products and restricting rises to coal, petroleum, iron ore, sand, gravel, and some stone. If the Supreme Court sustains the railroad retirement act, an additional $60 million could be added next year.
