Mrs. Liercke, a Clarence nurse and campaign leader, heads Cedar county’s Cancer Crusade with volunteers across towns. The 1953 rally opens April 8 at Moose Hall Tipton with Hank Hook as keynote speaker.
Sixteen Iowa stations form a state wide network to open the cancer fund drive with an eight to ten p.m. program produced by WSUI Iowa City. The two hour broadcast will originate from WSUI with skits and a documentary on cancer featuring top entertainers and greetings from officials.
A special training school for Cedar county cancer fund campaign chairmen was held Friday afternoon in Clarence under the direction of Mrs. J. A. Liercke. Present were Marjorie McCaw Earl Domer Norman Bergmann Herbert Freese Lou Winston Forrest.
Shrape J B Lane John Miller Carl Deichmann N Ebert and Helen Knocke attended the third training school Mrs Liercke has held this year.
Wharton Presbyterian Women and Methodist WSCS plan Wednesday gatherings with Circle 1 at 12 30 Circle 2 at 2 Circle 3 at 1 30 and Circle 4 at 12 30 plus reservations due by Tuesday. Sally Irene Paul joins Alpha Lambda Delta Alpha Chi Omega and Scottish Highlanders at Iowa. Prairie Chapel Community club postpones to April 9.
Dr Virgil M Rogers superintendent of Battle Creek Michigan schools and past AASA president told 200 plus attendees at Cornell college that superintendents should avoid public political and economic stance taking. He urged objective non doctrinaire roles as social engineers while preserving democracy through public schools. He praised schools as stabilizing forces in democracy and defenders of religious freedom and human personality.

Iowa State College announced a Weishea spring open house from May 14 to 16 led by Austin Christensen. The program aims to show prospective students what they can study, with departments encouraged to present original displays. Five divisions and the Institute for Atomic Research expect about 78 open houses for students and campus visitors, with over 2,000 students helping plan and present.
Jake More, Iowa Democratic chairman, condemned President Eisenhower for creating a refugee mutual security post paying between 13000 and 14500 dollars annually for Mrs. Hiram Houghton of Red Oak. More argued duties are undefined and charged waste and inconsistency with campaign vows.
The Iowa Employment Security Commission reports February average hourly factory earnings at $1.69, an all-time high. Average weekly manufacturing earnings drop to $69.70 from $70.44 in January, with weekly hours falling from 42 to 41.3.
Marion High School has completed a five year construction funded by a 200000 bond to add an enlarged gym and auditorium, new band rooms, a separate girls PE gym, and a large vocational agriculture wing with a 28 acre leased farm. The agriculture class, taught by Bruno Rinas, enrolls 48 students and conducts fertilizer tests with plans to grow corn and oats. The new homemaking wing, run by Mrs. Robert Muir, features a 66 by 27 foot room with six kitchen units and plans for a future living area to study home nursing and furnishings. Open house is planned for next fall due to current school activities.
Iowa City officials name William Hart chairman with George Frohwein as vice chairman and secretary. In Aurora, Mr. and Mrs. Norbert Knapp traveled to Fort Knox Kentucky Friday to visit Capt. Leslie Knapp and his wife.
Knights Templar will hold its annual public Easter service Sunday April 5 at 3 p.m. in Marion Presbyterian church. Dr Earl A Baker Cornell College vice president and former Marion Methodist pastor will give the address. Mrs C V R De Jong will sing. Apollo Commandery Cedar Rapids guests. Knights assemble at 2:30 p.m. in Marion Masonic temple and march to the church. Social hour follows at the temple.
Roy E. Larsen president of Time magazine and chairman of the National Citizens Commission for the Public Schools will headline the second annual Governor's Conference on Education April 13 14 at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He leads a 35 member lay leaders group and serves as director of the Ford Foundation Fund for the Advancement of Education.
University of Iowa graduates include George Gallup head of the American Institute of Public Opinion and Beatrice Gould co editor of the Ladies Home Journal, among the university’s best known women graduates.
About 300 students and teachers from 50 high schools join the twenty third annual Iowa high school art exhibition and education conference April 24 25 at the University of Iowa. Frank Og Madh leads the event with lectures by Max Schoen and William Beulmer. A TV Schooltime segment Wachowiak directs will screen films for teachers. A noted yet unnamed artist will critique works. A Denver museum of art exhibit of children’s experimental art supports the theme Direction in Art in Junior High School.
A University of Iowa researcher says daydreams help curb delinquency. Dr. Boyd McCandless told the Society for Research in Child Development at Antioch College that fantasy provides a cushion, allowing children to delay acts they might otherwise commit.
Rep. Thomas E. Martin reports a record number of responses to his annual district questionnaire in Iowa First, with about 4900 voters answering the 35 questions and 1000 adding letters. He mailed 40000 regular forms. 1800 were returned undelivered. He also circulated a state wide special questionnaire, receiving 2000 completed returns and 500 letters from Iowa voters.
Minneapolis convention ends with Howard B. Rine of Cedar Falls Iowa elected president of the Industrial Retail Lumber Dealers. G. A. Eddy of Swaledale Iowa steps down and H. S. Keister of Coon Rapids Iowa is re elected treasurer.
