Marching Air Won’t Click With Wartime Songwriters
Longtime editors and composers Mack Gordon Harry Warren Ralph Rainger and Leo Robin weigh in on military tunes for World War II. They say anthems should be gay and romantic not rah rah epics and predict a love song will anchor the top hit, while humorous parodies and camp singalongs also flourish. They note creativity stems from scripts and audience response, with camp Upton reminiscences and Crosby era experience shaping new wartime songs.
