A British naval force including two battleships and two aircraft carriers was sighted en route to the Indian Ocean within 24 hours of Japanese activity, as Rome radio quoted. In Burma, Chinese communique said Toungoo was battered in furious street fighting.
British and Chinese forces push to hold the eastern end of the Allied line in Burma, reporting an improved situation around Toungoo after recapturing the airport north of the town. Irrawaddy front sees little change as British troops block a Japanese advance toward Prome and Burma oilfields. air raids on the Irrawaddy town cause heavy fire but limited damage.
Havana dispatch from El Mundo reports two enemy submarines sighted off the coast of Cuba on Friday.
The Senate investigating committee, led by Chairman Truman, will probe the wartime aviation gasoline system. Evidence suggests Standard Oil of New Jersey helped establish prewar refining plants in Germany and that major firms received most contracts for 100 octane fuel while independent companies were left out. The panel also plans to assess government plant financing and profits offsetting future sales.
Federal agents and Hoboken police raided the Seemannshaus Deutsches known as the Seamen's Institute early Saturday capturing 68 residents as possibly dangerous enemy aliens. The raid occurred shortly before 5 am with about fifty agents involved.

FRANK HEWLETT reports from the Philippines that six hours of heavy bomb raids by new Japanese bombers targeted Corregidor. Despite fires, damage was minor. five planes were shot down and several damaged aircraft did not return. Coastal Cabcaben also faced punishment as Filipino and American forces held their posts. Night raids failed to hit targets as searchlights and shore defenses repelled the assault.
Washington AP reports George W. Christians of Chattanooga organizer of the Crusader White Shirts was arrested on charges of distributing propaganda aimed at mutiny and disloyalty among armed forces. Rudolph Fahl of Denver faces similar charges for undermining military morale. Courts to prosecute under the 1940 Smith Act, with up to ten years’ imprisonment and a $10,000 fine. Christians allegedly sent communications to Fort Oglethorpe and Camp Forrest. Fah l allegedly told air corps gunnery school officers at Las Vegas that they were suckers.
The London Star's Sydney correspondent said American submarines in the Pacific sunk five Japanese destroyers an aircraft carrier and about 30 transports and supply ships in the last two or three weeks with all sinkings around Australia. MacArthur's headquarters reported raids on Port Moresby and a Japanese vessel set afire at Koepang as Curtin warned of near misses. Darwin endured its seventh raid. two Japanese planes were shot down over Port Moresby and Quezon headed to MacArthur's headquarters with his war cabinet. General Blamey urged resolve to meet any Japanese front this year.

Hammer angled left after impact with Carl H Anderson and trailer unloaded to clear the scene. No injuries reported. traffic rerouted over Second avenue for over an hour.
Winter clung to Cedar Rapids as snow fell intermittently Saturday and the forecast calls for more of the same. Temperatures hovered around the freezing point with 28 degrees by midafternoon and a low near 18 expected tonight.
Des Moines and statewide forecasts show continued cold weather with a chance of more snow. Winds will be fresh to strong in the west and central areas as Cedar Rapids logged a high of 37 degrees and Mason City fell to 15 degrees Friday night, the state lows.

London reported a Soviet surprise strike 220 miles north of the Arctic Circle disrupted German plans for a Murmansk spring offensive. Soviet troops landed behind German lines, fighting near the Rybachi peninsula as Germans aimed to seize air superiority and Barents Sea routes.
The Office of Price Administration urged butcher shops and meat markets not to raise ham bacon chops or other pork prices above mid March levels and warned of prompt action against price gouging. Director Dan West noted pork prices are near seasonal highs with limited supplies and urged consumer vigilance and substitution with beans and peas to save pork for lend lease and UN forces.
In Bridgeport Connecticut a Remington Arms plant experienced a series of heavy explosions Saturday afternoon. Reports say blast victims were rushed to Bridgeport Hospital while a general alarm sounded and fire equipment responded to the sprawling factory complex.
Mrs. Colin P Kelly, 25, widow of the World War II ace who sank a Japanese battleship in the Philippines, begins a new job Friday as a secretary at a Los Angeles war plant. She previously traveled selling defense bonds and aiding Red Cross drives for the war effort. She aims to support her two-year-old son Corky Colin P Kelly III.
A subcommittee of petroleum retailers proposed limiting Midwest filling stations to a 12 hour day and 84 hour week to conserve labor and electric power. The plan was sent to the marketing committee of district 2 for action next week. Iowa listed among affected states.
Sir Stafford Cripps, British envoy to India, said he was entirely satisfied with talks with Indian leaders and expected another meeting with Gandhi. He plans to stay in India a fortnight, with a decision on the proposals within 10 days. The text of proposals will be published Monday, amid forecasts of a postwar federation with dominion status for provinces.
German high command said the British seaborne attack on the St Nazaire port and shipyard was crushed with heavy losses and 100 prisoners taken. They claimed British forces landed Friday night but were routed, while their own ships suffered no damage and a former American destroyer exploded under German fire.
