In Des Moines the administration backed effort to regulate direct livestock purchases failed 22 to 26 in the state senate. A 24 to 24 tie prompted two Democrats to switch to no to enable reconsideration, with adjournment ending the session and possible Friday moves on the vote.
Clarence Frenchette was found guilty of first degree murder in Howell Michigan for killing his employer Robert Brown during a quarrel over debts. After six hours of deliberation the jury returned a verdict and Judge Joseph Collins sentenced Frenchette to life in Michigan state prison. Frenchette had been employed by Brown in his Kalamazoo trucking business.
Police have identified the gunman who fired eight shots at State's Attorney Thomas Courtney as the man in the green gabardine coat seen from a Passi automobile. Authorities search the south and west sides for the shooter and his two accomplices in the attempted murder.
In Volin South Dakota 12 year old LeRoy Johnson son of a Yankton County farmer receives a team of army horses bought with pennies donated by soldiers and friends to help his family avoid losing their home. The horses from Fort Sheridan arrived by army truck, and LeRoy cried as he greeted them calling the animals beautiful. He and his 10 year old brother Roger planned to ride the horses back and forth from their farm as a sign of gratitude.
Belgium prepares to devalue its beign as foreign exchange markets reel worldwide. Royal decree closes markets until Monday and potential 25 to 28 percent devaluation is anticipated, with belga quotes tumbling to near 21.00 cents amid a gold standard retreat and fears of a broader collapse of the gold bloc.
Bernard M Baruch told the senate munitions committee that future tax exempt bonds should be eliminated while existing ones remain exempt. He warned that continued high munitions spending risks a world financial debacle and urged peace time manufacture of armaments under license or by the government.

The Iowa Senate approved repeal of the pink slip tax reporting requirement by a wide margin after three days of House action. Senator Costigan filed an amendment to allow state and local tax officials to inspect federal tax returns. Senators Dickinson and Murphy voted for the repeal.
Henry Berends and Orville Kruse, both residents of 1300 Twenty-second Avenue SW, were sentenced in district court by Judge John T. Moffit to one year in the county jail for larceny. The sentence, based on a state recommendation, suspends after 30 days if good behavior is maintained. The theft occurred March 14 at a farm crib about 1.5 miles north of Beverly and was investigated by Deputy Sheriff Dick Payn.
Rep. Patman proposes a gradual switch to free government credit as a follow up to a $2 billion currency expansion proposal. He would retire the public debt to save interest, take over tax exempt bonds, and charge states a small handling fee to cover costs while preventing inflation.
