Mayor Bill de Blasio suggested an unauthorized gas line access may have caused the blast that leveled a building in the East Village. He noted the restaurant owner reported a gas smell shortly before the explosion and said investigators cannot yet enter the site.
A Cedar Rapids native, Tiffany Westrom, 22, watched smoke fill her apartment after a Thursday blast leveled three East Village buildings. Two men are unaccounted for, possibly seen at Sushi Park. 22 injured, including six FDNY members. Officials cite no permits for work that day as gas inspectors had left moments earlier.

Keith M. Luter, 47, faces an attempted murder charge and two gun counts after police say he fired a single shot at an acquaintance’s sport utility vehicle on Edgewood Road NE around 5:30 a.m. The targeted driver escaped and later identification led to Luter’s arrest without incident on Ozark Street NE. He is held without bail.
