Conservation farmer sets example with no till and cover crops
Washington County farmer Steve Berger, a 2,200 acre corn and soybean operation with 20,000 hogs, has nearly eliminated nutrient leakage from tile drains using no-till and rye cover crops. Nitrate levels from his fields dropped 31 percent below southern Iowa average and 51 percent below statewide. He credits long-term no till since the 1970s and 14 miles of tile inlet terraces, with yields surpassing county averages by 45 bushels per acre. He holds the National Conservation Legacy Award and Spencer Award for Sustainable Agriculture.
