Linn-Mar administrators propose a 42.4 million budget for 2000-01 to keep the property tax rate at 15.94 per 1 000 of value. The board will certify on April 3 after a 7 p m hearing at the Linn-Mar Educational Services Center Marion.
Ossian farmer Don Witt watched a 25 car S and M Rail Link train derail near his Middle Ossian Road farm. A rail break under the fourth car from the end sent five cars off the track, spraying his lawn with corn and rock and damaging his driveway. Witt recalls no prior derailment in 17 years of ownership. Rail Link plans to reopen the line the following morning.
Bluestem Solid Waste Agency selects Midwest Electronic Recovery of Cedar Rapids for a one year computer recycling contract starting Saturday. The program allows private citizens to drop off computers at Bluestem Landfill Site 2 during business hours at a $5 per machine fee.
In Cedar Rapids, Jason P. Annis, 25, pleaded guilty to selling a stolen firearm with a potential 250000 fine and 10 years in prison. Sentencing is set for April 20.
