Iowa starts collecting DNA from selected inmates for a state offender database. Four DCI crime lab staff began taking samples this month as the program expands to all prisoners released after murder related offenses, with a goal of 90 day matches and quicker case resolution.
DNA samples are now taken from prisoners as they enter or leave Iowa prisons to build a national style database. The program targets those convicted of murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, sexual abuse, assault related to sexual crimes, and first degree burglary to compare with evidence from crime scenes.
The Justice Department said Elian Gonzalez’s parole would end on Thursday unless his Miami relatives commit in writing to surrender him if they lose their court fight. The move follows Reno's demand for rapid appeals and a promise to return Elian to his father in Cuba if the court loses.
Des Moines Gov. Tom Vilsack warned that proposed University of Iowa Iowa State University and University of Northern Iowa cuts could force reduced services and higher tuition. He said he would veto the Republicans' education bill unless funding levels rise from 688 million to higher levels and urged agreement on a budget to support higher education and research.
ISU coach Larry Eustachy was ejected late in a loss to Michigan State prompting comments from Ed Hartzell and Gov. Tom Vilsack. Hartzell called it pressure from a long year and high expectations while Vilsack offered an unofficial pardon and defense of the coach, noting the team’s accomplishments and the need to move on.
