Parole Board Nominee Faces Senate Scrutiny in Iowa
Gov. Terry Branstad’s pick Barbara Binnie to the Iowa Parole Board drew opposition in the Senate on Tuesday as lawmakers announce a public hearing on her qualifications. Sen. Robert Carr criticized the appointment saying the Des Moines resident lacks relevant expertise, while Branstad aides defend the selection as representing the public interest.

Iowa House approves four year license with same fee
The House voted 63 to 24 to replace the six year license with a four year version while keeping the $20 fee. The plan would shift about $18.9 million to the Department of Transportation over six years to fund the patrol and license examination operations. Backers say current fees do not cover operating costs.

State agency backs Blue Cross tax plan in Iowa
Iowa Insurance Commissioner Bruce Foudree says a proposed 1 percent tax on Blue Cross premiums will not raise subscribers’ rates in 1985 or 1986. He notes Blue Cross has a large surplus and current controls will offset the tax into the future. Blue Cross disputes timing of rate impact and says subscribers will bear the tax.
