A U S Army officer, part of the Military Liaison Mission in Potsdam, was fatally shot by a Soviet guard in East Germany. Veteran members describe the unit as a long-running, high-risk spy program operating under lax rules and rapid night operations to observe the Red Army.
In Heidelberg an unarmed U S Army major was shot by a Soviet sentry during a mission near Ludwigslust. The State Department calls it murder while the Soviet claim says the officer was caught taking photos in a restricted area. Reagan says Nicholson was not engaged in espionage.
At the 57th Academy Awards in Los Angeles the film Amadeus led with eight Oscars including best picture and F Murray Abraham as Salieri. Best actress went to Sally Field for Places in the Heart and Haing S Ngor earned a supporting award for The Killing Fields. Prince won best original song score for Purple Rain, delivering a brief speech before departing in a purple limousine.
Washington officials confirmed that the U S Embassy in Moscow was secretly bugged for about a year using sensing devices in about a dozen typewriters. The devices captured typed content and transmitted it to antennas within the embassy walls.
Senator Tom Harkin urged President Reagan to apologize for a Saturday night joke at the Gridiron Club Dinner implying grain should be kept and farmers exported. Farm state senators Exon and Pressler condemned the remark, as Nebraska Governor Kerrey voiced anger.
